Thanks. I’ve been thinking about this lens. Need to take the plunge. Your images are great.

Thank you very much, STS. I was going back and forth between it and the new 100-400mm for the convenance of a zoom, the new 150-400mm f/4.5 is just too expensive. A friend and photo guide for a nature travel company who shoots Olympus professionally, said I should try the 300mm first and I took that as a strong suggestion.

How great it is that the focus stayed on the birds instead of always on the surrounding twigs! Lovely.

Thank you very much, Kathy. The camera has a special feature where it reduces the focus square in size to about â…“ the area. Makes it easier to focus in clutter.

John, superb presentation and birds! Your presentation allows one to open and arrange the two birds as tabs in separate browser windows for all the male and separately all the female images. Looking just at the 1:1 details around the eyes and head feathers, it's hard (if even possible) to say there's a difference between the 300mm and the 600mm images that is 'different' due to the lens configuration rather than slightly different views and lighting.

For the male, I think the 600mm is the best of the three, with just the slight increase in ISO grain.

I know it won't happen, but I would be happy to see these examples put an end to the rampant UHH urban myth of the limitations of using extenders, especially the 2x variety. To my eyes the 1.4x was the slight difference, but only for the male, where his example was slightly less brightly lit, maybe impacting the AF performance rather than the extender.
John, superb presentation and birds! Your presenta... (show quote)

Thank you very very much Paul for such a complete response. Male cardinals present a special problem for getting feather detail at times. Light and light angle as you mentioned play a roll. Also when the feathers are flatten down, and the red is so saturated the detail is hidden. Hope to be shooting raw soon which I should help, but need a new computer and waiting for my second COVID shot before going shopping.

That is some serious glass, John! I usually do not get that crisp result from my 2x tc.

Thank you very much, Mike. There must be something in designing 2x tc or maybe manufacturing variation, because I've heard opinions both ways.

I was very keen to see the teleconverter comparison and see which I preferred.
Can't do it. They're all very good.
I think it must be the cameraman that has his act together.
