Glad it worked out for you. I learned the "back-up lesson" many years ago. I used to back-up to DVDs and keep them at my Mom's house 60 miles away. Now I put all of my photos onto my internal hard drive, which is backed up every night to an external drive. The folder they go into on my internal drive is connected to Dropbox, so they are uploaded there as soon as they go onto the internal drive. Whenever I process photos, they also go the same places (the internal and external drives and Dropbox) and I don't reformat memory cards until they are in all 3 places. I pay $199/year for 3 TB on Dropbox and think it's worth it, as it is also great for sharing photos and is very easy to use.
Glad it worked out for you. I learned the "b... (show quote)

So glad you have a plan that's working for you!

I agree that having images in multiple places is a great idea. I have none on my computer. I keep only programs on the computer. I have images on three stand alone hard drives. I think my computer might fail before the external hard drives. They have saved my photos once before when I was hacked. They got to my computer, but not to the external hard drives. Glad you were able to successfully recover your shots.

I don't keep any on my internal hard drive, either. One of my computer gurus is trying to talk me into doing that, but I think it's a mistake. And just for the reason you state. But I do have a question: If the externals are plugged in, can they be hacked? Or is it only when they are unattached they are safe?

Yes they can. And while they may be safe for the time they’re unplugged, eventually you have to plug them in to access your data IF they start (a large percentage of drive failures occur on start up). Best strategy:

1) use high quality enterprise HDs or SSDs
2) keep your virus definitions and malware detection SW up to date
3) enable restore points and VSS (volume shadow copy service) on your drives or snapshots on your NAS
4) schedule regular backups
5) keep a disaster recovery copy off-site, preferably in the cloud.
6) understand the deletion policy for your various forms of storage (if you accidentally delete the primary copy, does the deletion propagate to your backup and disaster recovery copy?)
7) use safe computing practices - don’t open emails from an unknown source and especially attachments!

Do these things and your chances of losing your precious data are very low. Miss any of the above, and the chances go up. Simple.
