Nomex.
Seriously - take test shots - review and adjust and take some more. It's better than any other advice you will read about, other than it being essentially the same as shooting a back yard fire pit.

Thank you Gene. This will be a new experience.

We went out with a guide, meeting her around 3 a.m. Glowing lava shows up better after dark. 3 a.m. to avoid evening crowds. Go in the daytime to see lava tubes, etc.
Here's
my daughter roasting marsh mallows at Kilieua.
Other:
Gardens in Hilo. And there is a nice water fall near Hilo.
Try to get a tour of
Keck Observatory, near Kilauea.
Military ID? Check out breakfast at
Kilauea Military Camp. .
Stop in the "hippie town" of Pahao.
Swim with turtles in the Kapoho tide pools with volcanic heating - if the roads are open. Lava flows blocked many in that area.
But make sure you can even get to the volcano as eruptions can cut that short. Avoid fresh lava flows over bare spots: methane plus grass bursting into flame --> explosions. And, yes, hot, crusted-over lava can melt shoe soles. My feet got hot.

Those are some nice suggestions. With all that’s there I think we’ll need to make more than one trip to Hawaii.

I just noticed you are from Wasilla. Not enough earth quakes up there? Need a warmer clime? Enjoy the trip.

We do get our share of earthquakes. Most are so low on the Richter Scale that we don’t feel them. And yup, looking forward to a spot of nice warm weather, palm trees and sand beaches. Might even take a picture or two.

We are going to Hawaii next month and will be visiting the Volcanic National Park on the Big Island. I wonder if any of you with experience photographing volcanoes could give me a little advice on how to to that. I will be using my Sony RX100VII and iPhone 11. Thanks in advance.
Thanks for posting this; lots of good information We're going in July and it will be my first visit to Hawaii, though we go to Kauai at least every other year (and will do so after Hawaii). Have a great trip and share your photos and experiences.

Will do. We went to Kauai several years ago—2000 to be exact, and we really liked it there. Very laid back attitude in Kauai. You’ll enjoy it.

I've been to Oahu and Maui a few times, but we love Kauai so much that we bought a timeshare there 12 years ago. We're going there in July, December and then January 2022. We're planning a cruise up your way, probably in about 5 years (we've got some other trips ahead of it that are a bit more "strenuous" from the Bay Area).

We found Maui to be busy and congested, but fun, with lots to see and do. The road to Hana was an adventure.

We drove the Road to Hana 15 years ago (in a minivan with 3 of our "nearly adult" kids) and really enjoyed it. That road would be a blast in a Miata with no traffic!
