I have 20-30 reels of 8 mm movies from the 1940s I would like to have converted to a digital format. Do you have any suggestions of who to use for that? I no longer have a projector to check out if the reels are even worthwhile, just hoping to find some old family memories. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Buy an old 8mm camera on ebay and transfer them yourself.

Thank you. I’ve looked at some websites and I’m hoping for some personal experience. Have you done this?

Thank you. Unfortunately I don’t understand how this works. Do you mean an old movie camera?

Yes I purchased an old hand help 8mm and super 8mm camera off eBay then connected the camera to my computer and copied the our movies. It was kind of a process and time consuming but it only cost 35 dollars. I like to tinker so it was not much of an issue but if you are not computer comfortable it may be better to send them off.

My cousins had a bunch of videos converted - they used Legacy Digital and were pleased with the results. This was about 10 years ago.

No a hand held camera. When I get home on Wednesday I'll send you some pictures via pm. I can help step you through the process. Let me send you some pics Weds or Thursday at the latest and you can make a fully educated decision. Sorry I can't help sooner. I actually drove from Eaton Ohio to Bowling Green Ohio to pickup the camera due to going up that way to pick up a car. If you search the hog you should be able to find the post where a hogger taught me how to do it. About 2years ago I believe

Thank you. Just want to make sure I am included in the PM! I’m very comfortable with computer software and processes, just don’t yet understand what your process is. I appreciate your help. No worries about time. The movies have sat for 70 years and can wait a bit longer!!!

I found a box of my father's old 8mm movies from the 40s and 50s about 8 years ago. Three years ago I used Legacy to transfer them to DVD. They came out decent. Of course, the film is very old so your quality is going to be different than new film.
I recently found two more reels. I sent them off to Southtree on January 20th. I'm still waiting for them back. Legacy seemed much quicker. However with Covid times everything seems to take longer.

Google these guys. They are out in Vegas.
I used them for all my transfers when I owned a photo lab. Great work and they have state of the art equipment.
