Yes- don't go up to Tahoe without chains -if you have a rental car make sure they are included - this time of year it can snow any time - and we have not had one yet so we overdue - fall colors should be in full swing also. Aspen & willows. - reds & yellows

Harvey,
If they can't get through Stateline traffic, they can always go back to 395 (maybe via Kingsbury) and down to 88 to 89. I know a good guide up in that area.
I'm jealous....what a gorgeous area.

I mean Silver City. Senior moment.
Was there in '88. Get tickets for dinner on the "Miss Dixie" paddle wheel boat..think it's still in operation. Takes you around the lake..about a 2 hour ride or so.

We are taking a trip to Reno Nevada in 2 weeks. Are there any suggestions on where to to to take the best pictures at Lake Tahoe?
There is a paddle wheel cruise you can take around the lake that is great. I also recommend Emerald Bay and the hike down to Vikingsholm. Take the drive around around the lake which is very scenic.

A few advisories:
1. You are going to be above 6000' in altitude. If you have COPD or heart problems, consult you doctor before traveling. Also you have less protection from UV rays at altitude; if you are out of your car in the daytime and, especially if you are light-complected, carry and use sunscreen.
2. If the weather is stormy, carry chains. I have seen snow in that region in July! It's unlikely, but if it starts snowing, head for Reno or Carson City.
3. Traffic on 28 is two lane, congested and slow; do not get in a hurry. If you get tied up by an accident, either be patient (clearing can take 2-3 hours) or turn around and tahe another route. Traffic at South Lake Tahoe (especially 5 miles either side of Stateline) can be like an LA freeway at quitting time; just be patient and you'll get through it. There is a way around, but you do not want to take it. Right, Harvey?

There shouldn't be that much traffic up there two weeks from now. The tourist season is pretty much over. And by the way, if he misses the turn and drives to Carson City, he can take photos of our famous train. Lol.
Sounds like a lot of fun with lots of great photo ops! Looking forward to seeing lots of great pix when you get back!:-)
Hey have great time and please post some of your shots. Am now 81 yrs old but went skiing there in '98,99 have a few shots myself taken with a vid cam. Would love to see Tahoe again! My favourite sweater (now well worn ) was purchased there.
See it from the air. In Pioneer, CA., go to the airport and ask for Ken Couey. He is a flight instructor/commercial pilot that flies out of Pioneer Airport and he knows the area very well. He has a highwing aircraft which is great for photography.
CPL: technical question
I think CPL stands for Circular Polarizer Filter, but I think linear polarizers, such as are used in sunglasses, are what are used in photography. I'm pretty sure circularly polarized light is very rare in nature. Also, these are really filters, not lenses, are they not? Why the term CPL?

One of the best locations on the Lake is the old lighthouse overlooking Emerald Bay. It is a bit of a hike but well worth the effort. It is off the Rubicon trail, just ask the Ranger for directions.

Emerald Bay. Which route are you taking to get there?
Make sure to take the easy hike to the waters edge too.
