Gray Skies and Nothing But a Tree Stump

I went out to practice some long exposure photography this evening and wasn't really feeling anything more than simple compositions. I guess the tail end of winter set the mood for this long exposure of a tree stump in the shallows of Perdido Bay.

This was a 30 second exposure using a 3 stop WCC ND filter and CPL to pull out some slight detail of buried tree remnants just under the water surface. And being that it was a dull evening near sunset, I just had to take all color out of it.

Great capture and rendering. I like the composition just the way it is, any change to the crop would cause an imbalance. Very Zen. Thanks for sharing.

Cool. At first I thought it was an island. Guess it is in a way.

If have to admit, when I read the feedback on this I had to go back and look again. It kind of grows on you! So the purpose of the long exposure was to smooth the water?

That is exactly why I did it for this one. I have others that aren't really good enough for sharing that the focus was more on the overcast clouds and smoothing them out to create a nice movement effect.

Since I don't have waterfalls and mountain streams to practice on, I have found coastal water systems provide their own unique long exposure misty (or dream-like) effect.
