So ... do ya like it or not?

Yes, I like it a lot. I am not saying that the results would have been the same, but, to me, this looks like a place Claude Butcher would have placed his tripod and camera to make an image if he would have been in this area.

My first thought was that it would make a heck of a fine large display print. I like it just the way it is. The noise as seen in DDL, contributes rather than detracts. A very good photo.

Hi, quixdraw,
Thanks for your comments and your favorable mention of the noise. In the initial 18” x 48” print that “grain”, which I liked on closer vow of the B&W, is not noticeable. There will likely always be disagreement among the “close viewers”.

Hi Coz in the Colonies. To my eye the basics of this photo are sound. The eye is encouraged to go deeper into the scene and there is enough to sustain the viewer's interest. However, while some people may be able to tolerate noise, I'm not one of them, especially where skies are concerned. To my mind softness is one of the qualities that make skies beautiful and noise can undermine that aspect of them.

I see what looks like the signs of generous amounts of sharpening. My suggestion would be to back off with the global sharpening and add some local sharpening to the line of trees across the middle. My other suggestion would be to slightly brighten the shoreline that's visible beyond the channel through the reeds in the middle distance. It would enhance it's role as an eye attractor.

Hi, coz in the old Country, thank for your typically thorough and thoughtful commentary and critique. I particularly appreciate the thought re: brightening the shoreline beyond the channel. I have this vague feeling of thinking to do that.... and then forgetting to! So thanks for that!
Best regards, and stay well!

Hey Dave,
For me, it seems a bit too busy as a B&W composition. I think with the leading line (water channel) dividing the foreground interest, mid-ground, and background through the middle with the added clouds, the crop could be tighter. Maybe only one tree on the left instead of the two?

Again, just my thoughts on an otherwise great shot.

Thanks, John G-707
As mentioned, I’ve waffled a bit re; the framing trees...more thought necessary?
I do appreciate your inspection and thoughtful commenting.
Stay safe and stay well,

I agree with Quix. There is so much TEXTURE in this image that all of the noise in the sky seems like it belongs there as a contributing element. Beautiful (that from a guy who is not a fan of B&W).

Thanks, camera4,
I’m glad you appreciated my uncommon excursion into B&W!

I think it should not have anything cropped off but my eyes go straight to those clouds. To me it looks like the clouds are the focal point of the picture. I think if they were softened a good bit, it would be the perfect landscape.
JMHO.

Hi, Jo,
Thanks for your positive comment and thoughtful suggestion re: the clouds. I do appreciate them.
Best regards,
Dave

It's a lovely photo and I like it a lot. However, in the download it appears pretty grainy.

Thanks, Dave

Hi, Dave,
I intentionally accentuate the grain for the B&W conversion, and in the 18”x 48” print viewed at NVD it is not as appreciable assI had hoped.
Go figure?
Thanks for looking and commenting.

Hi, RodeoMan,
As a fan of Clyde Butcher’s work I do take that as a compliment!
Many thanks,
Dave

If you have the raw you may want to re-process to reduce the grain.
After that a quick shot of topaz de noise if you have it.

Thanks, Hamilton,
...but viewed at NVD the grain is only very slightly perceptible. Viewed a bit closer the grain is, IMO, quite compatible with the B&W treatment. I guess it’s an artifact of fifty years of B&W wet darkroom! I guess some will appreciate it, and some won’t.
