Just a fun photo....Something you don't usually see everyday. Wife & I were departing Ft Lauderdale for a cruise a few years back and as we left the breakwater, I thought I saw what looked like a buoy off in the distance, then I saw it was moving. It was coming directly toward our ship, port side, at < 1/2 mile and then made its turn to port, toward Ft Lauderdale. In the first photo you can see the rudder shifted to port. I called to my wife to come see this and I told her to watch for the wake and bubbles of torpedoes since it was coming straight at us... Couldn't stop laughing since she thought I was somewhat serious, the surprised look on her face...

Anyway I presumed it was an attack submarine making a well deserved port call in Ft Lauderdale. Just posting as its unusual and something that's not routinely seen, definitely not your everyday whales and porpoises....enjoy.

I was stationed on a submarine during Vietnam then transferred to a troop transport ship. One day I saw a periscope aimed our direction. I knew it wasn't an American periscope and worried that we were going to be attacked. Apparently they were just checking us out, whoever they were.

Yes they are hush-hush Bill....we always had one with our task force but never knew where it was although it did do some exercises with the ASW aircraft on board....either way we never saw it the entire cruise but it was there for protection.
