A different yet honest comparison of the 2 cameras.

That's a good article. Thanks for posting it. I will definitely be keeping my D500's which is a DX version of the D850. I may add a Z6II sometime.

Thanks I thought the same. I also have a D500. I have been thinking about a D850 but really since I shoot bif and wildlife 95 percent of the time I can't justify it. I have thought hard about mirrorless when the focus system betters the D500. Not sure if I'll be able to purchase a complete new lens system may be my hang up. Only time will tell. I'm sure they will surpass the D500 but depending on the expense of a new system it may not be worth it for an amateur. At least in my case.

Wow, that’s a lot of words to say a little, but that’s normal in Fstoppers. I shoot a D500 and the original Z7. I love both, but when Nikon finally releases the Z mount 200-600 I might trade both in for a Z7II. Or maybe wait and go really big with the rumored Z9. I will agree with one point. There’s a learning curve with the Z’s focus modes. Then again there was a learning curve with the D500 too.

If you use the crop mode on D850 you have a D500. Why not have the best of both worlds is what I was told after I bought both cameras. I put a battery grip on both with the D5 battery and wow on both cameras. Now should I let the D500 go is the question. Im sitting on 4 cameras with low clicks and great shape. My D3s and D4s hardly used. Some decisions to be made

I don’t understand why anyone would use crop mode unless they were using a DX lens that didn’t cover the FF sensor. You’re better off cropping in post. Also you don’t really get a D500 by cropping a D850. You lose a little pixel density.

Don't you mean the D500 is a DX version of the D5? I have the Z6 II and 5 Z lenses and the advantage is in the lenses.

You're right. I was thinking more about the sensors in the D500 and D850. Their sensors have approximately the same pixel density and don't have an anti-aliasing filter.

The D500 and D5 have the same supposedly AF system. I was talking about sensor.

I rented the Nikon Z6II for two weeks recently. I used it mainly at a studio photo shoot. There was a learning curve. It was so much different than my D500. I really liked the face and eye detection autofocus for the studio shots. It found the model's face and then her eyes. I did some screen shots with "Show Focus Points" open in Capture NX-D. The first two here are not sharp because they're screen shots. The third one is out of the camera.

For BIF, the D500 is still superior.

Interesting article but a little long winded. I still like the look and feel of a bigger rounded off DSLR than a squared off smaller mirrorless and the newer technology hasn't changed for the better in my opinion, it's just another way to take pictures.
