Hi, I was out shooting with my 80D and EF 100-400 11 lens yesterday, and was approached by another photographer. He asked me why I was using EF lens on a crop sensor camera instead of EF-s lens. I told him I usually use my 5D M4 but that was setup for another project now. He said you shouldn't use that lens on that camera, but couldn't explain why, he just the person at the camera shop told him that. I've never herd that before and my pic's come out awesome " IMO " with that combo. Has anyone else been told this??? Is there any truth to this??
Thanks
Tom

If I still shot with a DX camera, I would always buy full frame lenses for itโ€”if financial means permitted.

It is not truly designed for APS-C. Having said that, the differences in resolution are pretty much nil. Leave it to the pixel peepers to actually find the differences and keep on shooting.

I habitually shoot FX lenses on my DX cameras - results are better than with most DX lenses I've used.

I have mastered the "IDGAF" stare if people are ever around me. It says I'm not approachable and I don't want to engage in small talk. The random and sometimes incorrect comments like the one you received above are something I haven't had to deal with, but the tourist "getting anything good?" question gets old.

Total Bullocks. The L series lenses are the best and can be used on all of Canons DSLR's including the crop sensor bodies. It's not true the other way around. You don't want to use a EF-s lens on a full frame body. In fact, you can't because they won't match up or mount. You CAN us all of the EF lenses on all of the Canon bodies.

Believe none of what you hear and half of what you see.

The lens is fine for a crop camera. The cameras sensor really only uses the sweet spot in the center of the lens so your shots, as you know from experience, come out very clear and sharp. I use that lens on my 7DII (apsc) and my full frame 5DsR and am very pleased with results from either.

Iโ€™d ask him which camera shop he goes to and NOT go there for advice.

Hahahaha. SOOOOO true.
EVERYBODY is an expert. EVERYBODY's got an opinion.

Can't use some lenses on some bodies because the back of the lens will interfere with the mirror.
(The lens protrudes too far into the body.)
If the lens fits mechanically, use it.
Canon cameras have a white and/or red dot on the body as to which lenses they will accept.
My T1i has both dots.

Maybe the fact that the lens doesn't "MATCH" (APS-C v.s FF) the camera is a problem for some.

There was a recent web guru who was a youtube team with his wife, that gave a lot of science sounding reasons why DXO scores proved that crop lenses performed better than full frame lenses on crop cameras. I did not follow the math he used. Logically it would seem the full frame lens casts the same image circle no matter the size of the sensor, and the crop sensor would only use the sweeter center part of the circle. So I'd say go forth and gather photons.

If you can't dazzle them with brilliance,
baffle them with bullshit.

(I'm beginning to interpret "web guru" as a derogatory term.)

You can't argue with ignorance ....

But, if you had wanted to, you could have mentioned there are no EF-S lenses longer than 250mm where your cutting-edge 100-400L II clearly exceeds that limitation.

This is the video in question. Without personal attacks on the producer, can anyone tell why he is right or wrong?
