Powelton Baptist Church org 1789 Hancock County Jawja
This is the oldest “rural” church I’ve photographed. Powelton almost became our state capitol but fell two votes short of Milledgeville in 1806, today it’s an unincorporated community that is defined by this single structure. This is where the Georgia Baptist Convention was organized in 1822 and both Mercer and Shorter Colleges trace their roots back to this little country church that remains active after 233 years. Hope you enjoy.

Quaint historic church - based on the level of maintenance, the congregation must be small. Lovely captures and appropriate rendering.

Thanks Frank. Now that you mention it they look a little flat to me too. It was heavily overcast the day I shot these and they are finished fairly accurately to the light they were captured in. Looking at them today I could bump the temperature up slightly and give them a touch more contrast to have my “next” look... Anyway thanks for the comment...I’ll play with these some more

Thanks jederick...I'm in awe that the church has survived the decline of community affluence and activity through it's long history, must be something special going on in there still
