An interesting and detailed tutorial on light

I was looking to buy a copy of the textbook Light for Visual Artists by Richard Yot and came across his 4 part itchy animation website series on light, starting with basics but getting into a detailed description. Anyone read his textbook or his web articles? Or have other resources on light?

Not sure putting your link in a quote of your own post will keep it out of "Links and Resources"

Better to let someone else reply, then post the link. Even that's not 100% foolproof!

I was hoping to start more of a conversation about light with the link as a starting point rather than just to share a link.

I've tried the same to no avail. The Admin is either automated or merciless and does not read the thread! If you're game, tomorrow I'll post a quote from Galen Rowell about light and landscape, and then you can join the discussion by mentioning this link.

I learned a lot by taking a well-lighted photo and drawing rays from the shadows thru the part causing the shadow. Doing so gives you insight as to how the light was positioned.

Textbook on lighting... need not be new.... old Kodak books were excellent they, Kodak, were the source of all knowledge in the film era. Go to Betterworldbooks and do some searching for old books at bargan prices.

My friend, an artist and teacher, had his students draw an egg on a white table, with a sharp black pencil! Really makes you aware of shadows, highlights, transitions and perception. Try it!

One of the assignments in the camera club was white on white. We all found out that it was a difficult assignment.

Each section of the link I posted starts with a similar illustration, going through the effects of each type and direction of light.

Just a quick comment. During a total eclipse, the light from the sun comes from a smaller and smaller area, somewhat like a slit in a spectrometer. As a result shadows become very sharp.
2. Just before and after totality, there can be an effect called shadow bands, waves of light and dark on the ground on light surfaces. In Chile in 2019, waves of light and dark appeared to be 3d, off the ground about 2 feet, as if the air was colored water floating. Ground was sand colored and sun low in sky, maybe 20° setting behind mountain. 3. There numerous weird lighting effects in nature such as the green flash at sunset just recently videoed.

These maybe interesting to look for and photograph or give one ideas or knowledge of light to apply to other things.

Look in used book sites for book titled Unusual optical pheno... or something similar.

That is interesting. I'm primarily interested in everyday light, particularly outdoor.
