I have had good luck with Optima batteries. They are rather expensive but they are high quality. Not sure how big a battery you need...

Eneloop Pro. Eneloop Pro has a capacity of 2500 mAh –this is 500 mAh more than the regular Eneloops. Their only potential downside is that they can be charged 500 times β€” not 2100 times like the regular Eneloops.

Ikea's Ladda scored very high. I believe it's made in the same factory that makes Eneloop. It's cheaper too. ( Probably same battery)

Amazon Basics AA High-Capacity Ni-MH Rechargeable Batteries (2400 mAh), Pre-charged - Pack of 8 for $18.99 not bad or you can get them with the 4 batt charger.
Please let us know which batts you chose and how they have worked for you.

I bought some Ikea Ladda rechargeables and they were such a tight fit I haven't been using.

Rich I think others have answered your battery question, but what I am wondering about is there a set of stairs, or a ladder for that matter anywhere that has a different number of steps going up and coming down. lol

If it has 4 AA it is a 6 volt system

Walmart
Sporting goods, buy 6V game feeder battery <$10
Automotive, buy small 12v bulb with socket that has 2 wire socket <$5
Box Of blade connecters that will fit the battery <$2

Junk box or Second hand store
Wall wart 6V <$1

NOW,
Cut the end off the plug end of wire from wall wart
Look at the wires coming from the wall wart you will find a dotted. solid line or ridge on one of the wires, this is the positive, wire your bulb to this wire and then to positive side of the battery and to your lights other side of wall wart and battery to other side of lights.

Exp.....
If voltage on either side of the 12V bulb is different it will pass engery (and only glow) if equal it does not, so this is your regulator
