I think that many people who do birding with a 200-500 Zoom find themselves generally using the 500mm focal length, which raises the question: why not go all the way and buy the Nikon f/5.6 500mm lens? Not only is it sharp, but it's actually incredibly compact for a long lens. I haven't quite got used to mine yet, but so far, the results are good.
Delta flight at 39,000ft with D750 and handheld Nikon 200-500 lens. That is 7.38 miles or 11.88km above my location. I'd say it's a pretty good lens.

Anyone on this blog interested in a new Kirk collor for the Nikon 200- 500mm. Originally $210, will sell for $125.
$3,600 when last I looked vs. $1,399 a hundred less "street". Plus the extra flexibility of a zoom. Add a TC- 14 E II and on a DX camera an equivalent range of 300mm without the converter to 1050 with. I sure would like a stable full of top end pro primes, but it ain't in the cards. I'll struggle along with the stuff I have and can afford.

attached are all heavily cropped 200-500 lens shots taken at 500mm - samburu, kenya. the 1st pic of the leopard was taken after sundown and was really dark. the 2nd pic of the leopard was after editing. turned auto iso off after taking a few at iso 12,000, 1/2000. 2nd taken at iso 400 at 1/30 sec on a bean bag. my guess is they are all around 50 yards. eagle was in good light, iso 140 @ 1/2000.
taken with d850 so i had pixels to work with. love the lens.
Although this lens is heavy, for me, I love the photos I've taken with it. I mount it on a tripod and it is much easier to use. I also have a "handle" that connects on the L bracket that allows it to be hand held comfortably. I worked with weights to build up my strength in my left hand, wrist and arm to hold the lens. It is impressive to see and more impressive to use. People come up to me and ask who I "shoot for". I just make something up because they don't believe that I shoot just for me.
