I want to buy this very old lens with the light charger from Japan at decent price of less than 200$ , the only problem is this lens will be Ai or Ais , the seller replies do not worry you can fit on your Nikon D4s , seeing he photo attached to lens doesn’t appear the famous fork used to couple lens to camera , someone can help me to make me comfortable to fit lens on my camera
Regards
Gianfranco

I have a D4s and all my AI and AIS lenses fit and work on it well in manual only.

Hi there. Either an ai or ais lens should fit just fine on your D4s (they have worked on my 700, 800, 810 & 850). You will need to go into the non-cpu lens menu in setup and add the basic info to get metering. It will go on your body in exactly the same was as other lenses do. The d4s does have the ai coupling feeler which tells the camera which aperture the lens is set to. This lens, though does not have a traditional aperture ring, instead it has an ISO setting for the flash, rather like the GN series.

According to Ken Rockwell's lens compatibility chart both AI and AI-S lenses will work on the D2, D3, D4 and D5 cameras.

I looked at 3 different eBay auctions for this lens by Japanese sellers with the $200 price you quote and the images seem to be of an AI mount and not an AI-S mount, but both will apparently work. I believe the forks you mention are on pre-AI lenses. Although I believe my 50mm f/1.4 AI-S lens also had those forks (also called ears).

There is a comprehensive article for this lens and it's f/5.6 predecessor at the Nikon website:

https://imaging.nikon.com/history/story/0069/index.htm

It gives a 1981 date for the introduction of the f/4 version which I believe would put it in AI territory. The article features some sample images taken with a D800E which would indicate it would also work with your D4s.

The article also mentions a screw-in front attachment that would allow for 2X magnification. I believe I saw one on eBay for about $35 if you are interested. It was the last item shown when I did an eBay search for "medical nikkor".

Hope this helps.

The prong on Ai/AiS lenses is for use only on non-Ai cameras - it serves no purpose on your camera.

A non-AI lens can be converted to an AI lens. And when a lens was converted by Nikon from a Non-Ai lens to an Ai lens, the ears where left on. You should call him to see if this conversion was done.

Gianfranco47, that is a great lens and it should be a joy to work with. I've had my eye on them for quite some time although they are far and few between. Back in the day, dental macro was a niche market and there were some manufacturers that specialized in meeting those needs.

Shooting inside a dark mouth and the need for a 1:1 ratio yet variable in range of magnification lens led to specialized on-lens flashes.

That should be an "F" mount and of course it will be a manual focus use....as much macro work is. The light meter of the camera should work although I doubt that the aperture reading of the camera will communicate with the lens so as you open and close it may not display the f/stop in the viewfinder.
