It would be interesting if you could obtain a greenhead (horse fly) and do this shot of it.
Those things have a drill for a proboscis!

Thanks, I've yet to find a Western Greenhead Horsefly although we have more than our share of others here. They have a pair of mandibles with fine serrations on them that come to a point. I posted an image of them last week.

Here's a image taken by Darrel Blackford for the USDA Forest Service that shows those pointed mandibles that hurt like the dickens when they stab you. They are seperated in this view however they form together like a sword ready for stabbing. The blood is then sponged up by the specialized mouth which can also be seen in this image.
