OK, especially for those who wanted downloadable pics, here's one. Find two animals. I'll post a cropped (download) pic later.

2 heron (can't be sure of species) hiding in the grasses. One with fish in break, a one without.

Definitely a possibility I didn't consider. BUT, I did find them!

Hmmmm! Just went back and looked again, and I can only spot the one bird with the fish in its beak. Yikes!

American Bittern. Can't tell what the other one is.

Don't feel like the lone stranger. And I don't think it is a fish in it's beak.

C-Rap, Jerry, I think you're correct that I'm wrong. On my 74th look, maybe it's a frog in the bird's beak.

1 Bittern +1 Salamander
The wildlife refuge had been closed for two weeks-one week for road repair; another because of the snow storm.
I had hoped to find snow to incorporate into some pics. I actually was looking for a bittern along the canal banks because there was still some clumps of snow embedded here and there in the long grass. I found this one hunting and hiding--stretching up to look around and collapsing down to a compact clump and then stretching out horizontal and stealth creeping through the grass. Was hard to keep track of it. No snow around where it was.

There is one thing on the lower right that "might" be an eye but is probably just shadows.
And there are some reeds behind, above and slightly left of the beak that sorta looks like a second beak but you follow the lines and they are reeds.
Finally there seem to be too many body parts for one bird so maybe there is another bird behind the first.

OK, I wasn't counting "Lunch" as a second critter. I guess this was the salamander's 15 minutes of fame. Some how I think he would have gladly passed on the chance.

Jerry, the answer was just posted by the OP. Thank heaven! It was driving me nuts!

I wasn't counting that as a second animal, either. At least we have the solution.
