Saving JPEG from Canon Digital Photo Professional 4 on MAC

Looking for some help. I shoot frequently in Cannon raw (CR2 format) and use the Canon utility on my MAC. I am running Canon version 4.8.20.0. It worked well until I upgraded to macOS Big Sur (Version 11.1). The utility still loads and does the editing but it won't save the result in JPEG. The support site has not helped me other than to indicate it is a known problem and to try doing batch editing and saving. There is an upgrade available that fixes this problem but it is only available on Windows. Any ideas on how to work around this problem?

And, I have never tried batch editing and saving, so if this is the only solution to the problem, does anyone have any tips on getting started?

I don't have mac, but on DPP4 in Windows you go to the top menu - file/convert and save, and choose the jpeg option and the quality. That is not working? Greyed out or just doesn't save the jpeg?

Hi bleirer - the menus are the same in MAC. The menu items are not grayed out. Instead, they just don't actually save anything. I tried saving to desktop, and then to a directory in my file system, but the jpeg file just never showed up. It used to work under the older version of the operating system, but it seems that there has been a change in the OS internals that is not backwards compatible. So the old Canon software no longer works. It is really annoying that it is a "silent failure", meaning that there is no error message and it just doesn't function correctly. I used to run an IT group and ran into this kind of problem whenever we had an OS update in the datacenter. We had to test our own code extensively against the new release to detect these things. Anyhow, I am wondering if anyone knows a workaround for my problem because Canon has not fixed their code to be compatible.

That is strange and surprising. The only workaround idea is if you also have Photoshop, then use the dpp4 tools menu to send to Photoshop and save as or export as from there.

Download and install the latest version of DPP. Then you need to go to System Preferences->Privacy and authorize DPP to have access to files and disks; just authorize DPP wherever you see it listed.

If Jrhoffman’s suggestion doesn’t help, suggest the Canon Community Forum. I’ve found it helpful.

Did you try saving the file in any other format, such as a 16-bit TIFF?

If DPP continues to disappoint, I would suggest using a combination of Apple Photos with the Raw Power Plug-in, and Affinity Photo. Photos came with your MacOS, and the other two are available in the App Store for less than a total of $100.

DPP is usually great stuff, but I know the other three work great, even on the bleeding edge M1 Macs!

I just tried to do what you are hoping to do on ACDSee Pro-Mac7. I opened the RAW-image and...File...Save As...JPG. I did it. It works in "Batch" as well. But, then...this would require a purchase of that software.
