I have a Sigma 17-70 2.8-4 and shoot a Canon 7D mk ll.. i want something a consent 2.8 ??
Cheers Ron,,& Thanks
What needs is your current lens / camera not meeting for family photos? Answer that and move from that point.
If you mean single members of your family in low light with no flash, f/2.8 will work. If you mean groups of 3+, an f/2.8 aperture will be of little use to get all the members in focus in most candid situations. Do you have some examples to attach as a basis of discussion, so we can consider all the possible ideas for the situation(s) you want to address?

I have and use the Sigma 17-70 - it is a GREAT lens ! ......constant 2.8 .....for what ?? There are none with that range . There are the Sigma 18-35 f1.8...... and a couple 17-50 2.8. .....plenty of prime lenses tho ...

The OP stated what he wants. “Needs” were not involved. Is it unreasonable that he might have what he wants ?
It seems verrrrry few lenses are made that fit his spec, so why is the answer not straight forward ?
OTOH, given as there’s barely a coupla choices, beats me why the OP is asking such a pointless question. The only real question is “Need help choosing lens-A vs lens-B”.
And since the choices are so limited and that the OP has set the spec, no point in the usual “what subjects, what working conditions” sillyhog interrogation.
I have the Canon 24-70 2.8 and the 70-200 2.8 and both are great lenses
i will just keep what i have and be HAPPY

You already have a lens that is f2.8 at maximum lens opening. Do you really need another lens with a fixed f2.8 aperture? You did not mention the conditions under which you will use the lens or why the f2.8 aperture is so important for your images.
I have several variable aperture lenses and I have never felt limited by them.
