Have you done any comparison shots with/without the flash extender? Better Beamer(?) I think.

Agreed. At least (Purple) Grackles are attractive birds; sleek and iridescent. Starlings are dumpy and dull but they do serve a good purpose when a large flock "invades" a property, turning over every leaf, stone and stick, searching for seeds and insects including ticks.

Just like Grackles, finches, hummingbirds, and many other birds, their appearance depends on lighting and time of year. Birds are at their best when looking for a mate.

Here is an example of a Starling taken in Spring with the D850.
