Tough question. We once drove the National Hwy from Cumberland, MD to its intersection with Rte 66 in southern Illinois and then followed 66 to Chicago (almost). We stopped in Indianapolis and did a bus ride around the brick yard. Then, later we drove from Flagstaff, AZ to Illinois. My best advice is to get a couple of guide books and see which parts look most interesting. You really need the books just to find where there are existing sections of 66. I really like the abandoned businesses but they are everywhere along 66.
