I am considering a 50 mm 1.4 lens. I have a Nikon D500 and a D3100. How does a Tamron compare with other lenses? My budget is $100-$200. Are used lenses a safe buy?

Like any other lens, Tamron has grades of glass good and better and best. I buy used now and then. Just do your research on where you buy from.

Buying from any of the bigger Photo stores (Adorama, B&H, KEH, Amazon) usually comes with some sort of warranty that allows you to return the item if not satisfied. I've purchased "used" from all of them with no bad experiences. Ebay is another story. Ask a lot of questions!!

Why f/1.4? Your budget seems too low, even for third-party and used. Consider the Nikon f/1.8. Sharp, smallish in size, and relatively cheap.

Now most of my equipment is used from Craig’s list. I test all of it before buying and meet at Starbucks. I have the 50 f1.8G Nikon that I don’t use much just not a fanboy. You can occasionally find them at 125-200. Try MPB.com you can rarely find the 1.4 for 250 to 300. Good luck

Your budget will not be enough for a 50mm f/1.4 Nikon lens unless you get a deal like I did on eBay (long story).

However, you can get a brand new and very sharp 50mm f/1.8D for $132 from Adorama. It will be fully functional on your D500 but will be limited to manual focus on your D3100 since neither the lens nor your camera has a built-in autofocus motor.

On your crop sensor cameras it will have a field of view equivalent to 75mm making it a good portrait lens.

As far as I can tell Tamron does not make a 50mm prime lens. They do make a well reviewed 45mm f/1.8 lens but it is about 3 times your max. budget figure at about $600.

You would probably be very happy with the 50mm f/1.8D lens...very sharp.

Another option that would give you approximately the same angle of view of a 50mm lens is to get an AF-S DX 35mm f/1.8G Nikon lens for about $200 new. This lens will give you an angle of view of 52.5mm on your crop sensor cameras and is very sharp.

Please consider a Nikon lens for your D500 and D3100 camera. This ebay Nikon comes with a 30 day as described warranty. In other words, if the item is not as described you can return it no questions asked within 30 days of the purchase date.
And the lens below looks really good, it is one of the best 50 mm 1.4 lenses they made. Check it out.
Good luck and keep on shooting until the end.

Unless you will be shooting in very low light conditions I would recommend, like Paul did, that you go with the Nikon 50 mm f1.8. Buying used from here or a reputable dealer is the way to go.

Buy a Nikkor 50mm f1.4 AF or AF D on ebay for under 200. Won't auto focus on the 3xxx but will work fine on the D500. Also consider a 50mm f1.8 AF D for around 100.

You can now add MPB to this list. Several years old in Great Britain, they have now expanded to the US. Excellent, fast service; very fair payment if you're selling, and 30 day warranty on purchases. Easy to trade in your old gear as part of the transaction if that's what you want.
