Table Saw Sled

I'm wondering if I should go to the trouble of building a sled for my table saw. I've gotten by without a sled for fifty years. I've been watching a lot of Jonathan Katz-Moses on YouTube, and he recently posted plans for a very fancy do-everything sled. I can see it costing me near $100 for the lumber and hardware. There are probably dozens of others shown online and in books I have, but do I need one. I'm sure my life would be easier with one, but...

Over the years I always built many of my own sleds without Katz-Moses woodworking.

I can see the appeal of a sled, but after getting by without one for fifty years...
I think I'll make a simple one and see if I want to get more elaborate.

I find my sled handy for some things because it eliminates friction between panels and table top. Mostly for things too large for the RAS and not big enough to bother with a track saw. I did without one for 46 years of woodworking, but have enjoyed it for the last four.

Worth the time to build one. Be sure to square the fence using the so called 5 cut method. You’ll be happy you did.

I have about ten of um in my shop. All shapes and sizes and do dads. One as big as 3'x4' requiring a separate custom saw horse to hold the end up to table height. (for cross cutting full sheets of plywood and doors) Even with a 54" fence to the right there are times I need to cut to the left of the blade. I suggest making the base from Baltic Birch, the best one is the simplistic one.

I vote for yes, also. It makes cutting easier - especially multiple same size cuts, with a stop built in to the sled.

I need to build one for a computer desk project i'm about to start. Has to be 2x4 feet long. Using birch plywood. I could buy A ready made station but I can save a lot of money doing it myself and I can have a spot for all the items.

Do you do enough woodworking to make it worthwhile? That's probably the determining factor.

I'm A retired finish carpenter,( still working] and have done a lot of cabinetry. It's going to be a L shaped station with a 30" x6' back.

Check out Incra.com there sleds ar far superior than anything you can build the Incra miter express would be my choice

I have the next size up of that sled along with a number of other of their tools... Incra makes some fine equipment. Always feels like woodworking gear that's been designed to be acceptable to machinists.
