I don't think the forest campgrounds are. I may be wrong but the last time I checked to go there the campgrounds were closed. Go on line to check independent lodging. Some neat places.

OP said Southeast. If I recall correctly it has big mountains and might be closed due to snow.

We have the same trip planned for next week. We are staying in Tombstone, AZ. Here is a link to the Arizona Game and Fish "Crane Cam.'

The cranes leave Whitewater in March. Their numbers start decreasing towards the end of February. Water is pumped into Whitewater and as the cranes leave less and less water is pumped in and it's pretty dry by the end of March. The water level is down now compared to former years. The camping there is pretty primitive and it's on a first come basis. Lots of people this year there.

Wilcox Playa and Sulpher Springs Valley down to the Mexican border, flanked by interesting mountains on both sides and plenty of birds, wildlife, historical sights and towns, and a small volcanic field SE of the Chiricahua Mtns. All this and not much traffic.

Search: Sulpher Springs Valley Birding
That should keep you busy. Expect humming birds to visit you in the mountains.

White water draw is a great place to shoot Sandhill Cranes. You are only about 100 yards from the birds. It is very easy to get to. Make sure you study the map because their are virtually no signs to point you to the place. From the parking lot it is only a minutes walk to the birds. Good luck.
