Only YOU can prevent forest fires and only YOU can decide to return it. Personally, I would have already sent it back for a full refund in a very well air bubble wrapped, padded box.

Hopefully the title isn’t to harsh for everyone but it fits. I order a lot from Amazon as most do. I order the majority of photo equipment from Adorama.

A couple weeks ago I ordered a $4 pack of 500 popsicle sticks for my daughter to build things. They came in a box with air filled plastic bags for protection.

I’ve been wanting a new Canon RF lens which is out of stock almost everywhere. This lens is over $2,500 with tax. Amazon had 1 in stock. I ordered it because it was shipped and sold thru Amazon not some 3rd party. It came by UPS 2 days later. Low and behold they didn’t bother putting it in a box. Just shipped it in the original Canon box. The box is covered with about 8 or 9 big shipping stickers so you can’t really make out what the box is. One corner is slightly smashed or crushed. Nothing major.

I’m very tempted to return it. I don’t know if it has any damage. I assume it’s okay but seriously. Pack popsicle sticks and don’t pack an expensive lens. Who made this decision?

If I decide to sell it in the future someone would see all the shipping labels on the box and may not want it. I hate to return it because I may be waiting a while to find another.

The reason for all the shipping labels is I wasn’t home to sign for it. UPS decided to send it to the UPS store for me to pick up. They created more shipping labels with that stores address as well as additional instructions for the staff there.

My concern at this point is weather or not the lens could have been damaged.

What I don't understand is why the condition of the box is important, I only keep the original box so if I have to return or ship the item for warranty. When I buy used the original box only shows that the owner kept it, nothing more nothing less. The important thing is is the lens okay? if it is no problem if not return it, but I would file a report including photos of the unopened box with the shipper, carrier and seller. In reality you should have refused to accept the lens with the box in damaged condition.

If it were me, unless you just have to have it now, I'd return it. It was possibly a returned item that they re-sold, meaning you may be paying a new price for a used item. No reputable dealer I know of ships without a secondary box. The lens though may be in perfect condition.

Well, my experience with reputable dealers, manufacturers in my case, has not been the same. I bought a 400mm F3.5 lens from government surplus that needed extensive rework. I sent to Nikon US for repair who then sent it back to Japan. The first time I received it, about 8 months later, it was shipped, from Nikon, in a single box filled with popcorn packing. It wasn't even in a plastic bag. At 7 pounds it immediately settles to the bottom of the box and by the time it had gotten to me the lens shade had been folded over on one edge. For those who know the lens it also has a screw shade extension built on that was folded over as well. Double boxing would have prevented this. Of course Nikon made good on it and after I requested it, returned it to me double boxed. But I get the original posters point about shipping.

Personally I see that most sales on ebay get any where from 10-18% more for there products offering a nice clean original box. So, I guess it's what you want. More money or throw the box away.

Amazon has always been very good about returning things, at least in my experience.
I would take my cell phone and take pictures of the damaged box BEFORE opening it. Then I would open
it and again take cell phone pics of the lens while it still in the box. Then I would take it out and try it. Go from
there.

Return it as damaged. They damaged the box. That is part of what you ordered. We order a lot from Amazon and I have never seen them do something like that.

No question. Return it! I would return it even if it we're only a $500 lens. That sort of shipping is absolutely inexcusable.

Don't open it! You paid for a new lens in the original, new-condition box; which has a lot to do with resale value. Amazon has already defaced the original box, so, on that alone, you deserve a replacement. If Amazon is so cheap they can't afford a cardboard box and some packing material, they should close up and go home!

It may have not been Amazon who mailed him he lens. Yes, he ordered it from Amazon, but Amazon has thousands of sub contractors who sell through them. Let's not be jumping on a company without knowing exactly who mailed the lens to him.

Amazon themselves are usually more responsible than that. But some of their third party sellers are not. So far I have not had any photo items recieved damaged from Amazon, Ebay, B&H, Adorama, or UHH.

But last week my wife received a plastic shipping bag with three corelle ware cereals bowls to go with the three we already had. One was shattered to tiny pieces the other two survived. There even was bubble wrap and cardboard but no %&#$[=* outer shipping box.

As to the issue of the labels on your lens box. I have purchased a lot of photographic equipment over the years since 1978. Much of my equipment was purchased used. I have only once had a minor repair to a lens filter, and once had a digital camera professionally cleaned. I pretty much keep and use all my equipment until it has little resale value or I give it away. I have slowly upgraded some lenses over time, from f 3.5 to f 2.8, f 2 to f 1.4, fully manual vintage, to AE, to fully AE/AF versions.
Many of my dups are used for different projects. And yes, I have a few in my "possible sell or didcard" box. The ones I might think to sell, by then no one will care about the box it came in if I got a box.

Geez man, open the dang box! Amazon has a 30 day return policy, that's why you buy from them. Is this what we have come to? Arguing over the integrity of a box toward resale? Are you collecting porcelin dolls or buying a lens for your camera?

This thread has to go at least 10 pages before the OP will have enough information to decide whether or not to return the lens.

Maybe a big decision like this is too big for discussion on just one forum.

I think the title chosen was very appropriate.

Time for a second cup of coffee. Black or with cream? Another tough decision.
