Thank you very much, Bill. Well it's kind of like fishing. Sometimes I come back to shoot and the nut is gone and sometimes I come back, wait an hour and give up. Actually my wife feeds the birds walnuts. We buy 3 lb bags at Costco. Always have a couple of walnuts around for bait. You asked about gear: I'm using an Olympus OMD E- M1,II (that's a micro 4/3). For these shots I used a 40-150mm,f/2.8 alone or with a 1.4xT.C. or 2xT.C. So in FF equivalence it spans 80-600mm.

John,
I thought I would give your idea a try.
I borrowed some walnuts from the kitchen and set a couple nice big halves where I want to photograph the Cardinel and Bluejays.
First, Steven the Herring Gull discovered and ate the walnuts while pillaging sunflower seeds. The next 2 walnut halves pleased the Redwing Blackbirds.

Well glad your getting some quick action when you bait the hook. Here's what I've found works well, Bill. To make it simple I'll assume there's a deck railing. I would clamp the perch branch to the railing so where the bird will perch is 12-18" above the railing. Then I put the nut on the railing maybe 12-18" further down the railing from the perch. Birds will often land on a perch before going for the food to check it out, giving a good chance for a clean shot. If you put the bird feeder there and birds are crowded around, some will land on the perch to wait a turn. Those are the techniques I've found work well. In fact I've built a stubby railing 32" long on five foot stilts for the purpose and sit in the house with the sliding door opened about 8" with a board put in that has a camera and viewing port. With an evergreen branch I've found you really have to put the nut on the branch, but it can be hidden from camera view. Good luck! - John

These are really cool shots in more than one way. I love colorful birds contrasting to snow.
