Nikon Z 24-200 vs. 24-70

The 24-70 came with my Z6. I bought the 24-200 for its wider range. After a substantial wait it came a couple of months ago. I was immediately impressed by its size and weight which are close to the 24-70. And by the 24-200 image quality.

So is there reason to keep the 24-70?

I got an offer for it from B§H that didn’t seem worth selling the 24-70. But then if I’m never going to use it...

I thought about doing a careful image quality comparison but hadn’t gotten around to it. Then I found a youtube comparison that did a better job than I could. (I’ll post the link in another post hoping this won’t get immediately shipped to links.)

Bottom line of the comparison: no difference in image quality.

For me that means the 24-70 is headed down the road. It will help finance the 14-30, which is arriving Monday or Tuesday.

That sounds reasonable. No point in duplicating things, and the 24-200 gives you that added zoom range with the same image quality.

So is there reason to keep the 24-70? NO! You have that range in 24-200

At what zoom range do you lose 1 1/3 F/stop?

You lose it by 70mm. But I don’t find that significant.

The review gets into that.

The 24-70 f/4 is capable of f/4 throughout its focal range. The 24-200 is f/4-f/6.3 through its focal range so it's possible that the 24-70 would be better in low light at its 70mm range than the 24-200 at its 70mm length.

I believe that an aperture of f/6.3 is more of a daylight use lens.

Yes. Plus less lens changing leading to fewer sensor dust spots. The Z6 has a several issues with that:

1. It attracts more dust because shutter is open when changing lenses.
2. Nikon strongly states you shouldn’t wet clean sensor because of delicate IBIS.
3. I’m convinced the auto clean on shutdown doesn’t work...as in it doesn’t activate as told.

So far I’ve done OK with occasional manual activation of sensor clean, rocket blower, and Arctic Butterfly. But every little bit helps.

Yes, as far as the lens goes. But the Z6 is awesome at higher ISOs.

I have the 14-30 coming Monday. It has the f4 min aperture over its range.

Here are the minimum and maximum apertures for the 24-200mm. I would keep the 24-70mm f/4 since it's an f/4 maximum aperture at 70mm while the 24-200mm is f/6 at 70mm.

Thanks for the info. I have the 24-200 on order, but I will now be keeping the 24 - 70.

On another topic that was mentioned (sensor dust), has any ever used the Image Dust Off reference photo? It has been around a long time and I'm wondering if it is a worthwhile option.

I usually shoot wide open, or close to it. Today I was shooting a scene in the snow and stopped down and discovered dust spot, the definitely not snow flakes. The "Clean Now" option on the Z6 did a great job. Itis the first time I used it on this camera.

Yes, the clean now works. But when I set the option to clean on shutdown it does not go through the machinations. So I think it doesn’t activate.

Same situation, owning the 24-70, but thinking the 24-200 a better choice. No action possible right now as the 24-200 seems to be sold out everywhere. I guess many others have made the same decision.

The decision to sell or keep is really up to you. BUT, this is what they are selling for currently on ebay, you can compare these selling prices to what B&H was going to give you. You must also subtract 10% ebay charge and 3% paypal charge. I bet you would make a lot more selling it yourself.

I am guessing it is the f4 lens. Try getting a quote from MBP. They offered me over twice what B&H or Nikon offered me for my D810. You could also try selling it privately. Check & see what it is selling for & then go cheaper if you want to move it.
