I researched this a year ago as my portable inventory (the stuff I usually haul around) exceeded $15K in replacement value. I found that adding a rider to my homeowner's policy was both the least expensive and provided the most flexible coverage.
Many insurance companies exclude events, situations, prorate based on value vs. replacement or a cost you establish, and require than you "hand over" the damaged item or provide a police report.
My coverage includes theft, dropping it in a lake, water damage, and in effect basic stupidity. I did have to provide a list of the specific equipment I wanted insured and what value I placed on each item however. That was easy as I already had such a list.

Thank you I checked my Homeowner's Policy, they cover 5K with a $250 exclusion on any loss which is OK if you are careful not to leave the whole lost together, my husband also is a photographer, we therefore have double the equipment, I was looking for a proper photogramic insurer and wondered if anyone knew of a name to give me. Thank you for your reply.

You are welcome.
I'm not sure what you mean by a
"proper photogramic insurer", but I am happy with what I have so far.
I added to my homeowners policy by paying 2-cents per $100 of insured value per year and the coverage is very comprehensive.
For $300 a year I have $15K of my more expensive and fragile equipment fully insured.
And I'm dealing with the same agent I use for hownwer's and auto.
I could not beat that combination of advantages anywhwere else.
Worth exploring.

Yes. You can add it to your homeowner's policy at 1% oof the value per year. In other words $30 per year for $3,000 of stuff.
You need to provide them the SNs and purchase reciepts when you first list the items.
It covers all kinds of loss.

You might want to get a different homeowner insurance. Yours is twice the rate of mine.
A rider on my 'Home Owners' was really pretty inexpensive there is a 'but'. If you are a 'professional' it covers zero! with my Home Owners policy. You really need to check with the insurance agent and read your policy. If your sell any photo's you are likely a 'pro' and will need to pay the extra for coverage. TNmike
The above advice is good. Read your homeowner policy to see the exclusions. If there is a hint of professional use, the homeowner policy will not cover the loss. Mine is with Traveler's through USAA. It is about $600/yr but that is also $2M in liability, $20K in serial numbered gear and a bunch more in "stuff" like lighstands, light meters, reflectors, etc. It is replacement value, not depreciated value. I think it is $500 deductible - I should check that.

My homeowners, at 1% of listed value, is for no deductable. But I don't know or care about professional exclusions because I do it for fun. But it only covers loss of the stuff.
Professional liability insurance is another kettle of fish.

Good point. I checked. I'm paying 1.5%, I just rounded it off to 2% since I did not recall the exact percentage.
I have no deductable, no serial numbers or receipts required, just a list of equipment with values. And no professional use exclusions. I can also change what is insured at anytime with a simple e-mail (add or delete items). That may be why it is 50% more that what you are paying, but at $270 per year for $18,000 of coverage, I'm satisfied so far.

Agree with comments here. Have insurance rider with my primary homeowner's insurance company. I provided a list of equipment with serial numbers if available. For @ $185 between $ 12 and 13 K worth of equipment is covered for theft or accidental loss ( including stupidity). The insurance covers replacement or repair of listed equipment. I review the list every year and drop or add items according to current needs.

Homeowners is the way to go but as you point out you need to provide the receipts for each item. I had a problem though. A couple of things I wanted to insure were bought used as a private sale. I don't have a sales receipt so the insurance company would not cover those things.
