Trump did encourage an i**********n. He wanted a reason to declare martial law so he could invalidate the e******n. It is telling that the Senate republicans are will to give him a pass for attempting to o*******w our government. It speaks to the power of the collective trump supporters collective and the cowardice of their elected Congressmen. Senators Hawley, Graham, Cruz and Rubio to name a few, are putting their self-interest ahead of what is best for the country. This is how far we have sunk and it has seriously empowered those who have felt ignored by government for so long. Trump is the modern equivalent of Nero. trump hasn't burned down all that we hold dear - but just give him time and he and his supporters will succeed. China is just biding its time... then hell will replace the USA. We are in the sunset of our society and trump is hastening it.

Kudos for naming a few of the Republicans who are the worst of the bunch. But don’t forget waffly Lindsey Graham. Today — at a break in the impeachment trial proceedings — he expressed anger at the C*****l P****e for not doing a better job of protecting the building!!!!!

You might want to read it again - I did list Graham. It's not surprising he would try to find some way out of this mess and blame others. He's someone I once respected but now think he is as craven as they come.
DukeTarHeel: Yes, I agree with most of what you have written. I always thought Trump hit on many of the issues facing this Country. While I abhorred most of what his perspective on these issues was and how he handled them, I understand why so many of them believed he heard them. Both parties had done nothing or little to address these issues. Minimum wage increases are necessary for so many. The wall came about due to immigration issues never having been addressed. Coal miners and steel workers seeing their way of life, pre viously being honorable means to support a family, now falling by the wayside. Manufacturing of automobiles being outsourced, parts being imported, GM buying Toyotas and putting their emblem on them, Farmers losing overseas markets, foreign workers taking away jobs, real jobs, clothing mills being closed in droves, US and Bethlehem Steel going bankrupt while being allowed to c***t thousands and thousands of workers out of pensions, school teachers having to buy their own supplies, too many children in classes with less and less control, Unions being destroyed, the growing income gap between those with larger and larger incomes, no day-care assistance for parents who needed help to be able to work. Gerrymandering taking away v**e meaning for many. Decay of downtown areas. Threats to ways of life that had survived for a hundred years and more. I get all of that and much more. Democrats did not do enough to overturn problems caused by the failures of both parties.
What should be surprising to most people is the fact that their choice for President is the elitist of all elitists. He does not care about those people other than to get their v**e. Can you imagine him shaking the hand of a mechanic with grease under his fingernails or a butcher or a real farmer after cleaning a barn. He tried to take away their healthcare, made no effort to resist the outrageous drug prices being charged only to Americans. Insulted veterans and women and never tried to do much for tax reform. Farmers overseas markets were affected negatively and nothing of real or lasting assistance was ever provided. Yet, despite his Admin never having their needs addressed in any way, but verbal, some large numbers were and are willing to die for him. I do not understand this low bar.
I try not to be pessimistic about our future, but the demanding nature of where we are is worrisome. I believe the current Admin has heard the cry for “better.” Whether those disaffected will allow it is worrisome. Will Josh Hawley, Ted Cruz, Little Marco, Mitch, Mo, MTG obstruct any efforts to improve. All serious concerns.
Scooter: As someone has reminded me to watch my manners; I realized how correct they are. I apologize to you and others I probably or assuredly have offended. I hope future discussions or interchanges of ideas can and will be more productive.
I also should have written that I was appreciative of your having taken the time to state your beliefs in a clear and concise manner, truly helping me to understand your perspective. We will probably never agree on some things. That is not nearly as important as taking the time to “talk” or exchange ideas. Respecting that each other wants our Country to be better is a step in the right direction, I believe.
