That is part of the plant.
Thank you for your comments. What you see is not a pole, it is the new frond emerging in the center of the palm. Member
"ftpecktim" got it right, it is part of the palm.
BTW, pictures were taken with a Nikon D7000.

I have never really been a fan of paintings or photographs of sunsets. They usually look naive and pretty. These are superb! Of the two I prefer the second shot with the big sky, a nice use of the rule of thirds.

Had a second look and definitely like the second picture with the big sky. It is after all a sky picture...a skyscape.
