Yesterday, my wife wanted to use the desktop computer, so I logged off and logged her in. She never did get to use the computer (which had been in sleep mode for hours), so I "woke it up" only to discover that there was nothing on the monitor - only a dark screen, so I turned everything off. This morning, the same thing - only a dark screen! I powered up my laptop and attempted to connect the monitor to it, but the results were the same. I even switched HDMI cables to see if that was the problem, but nothing! My question, then, do you suppose that it may be the monitor?? Since it won't work from the laptop, I'm assuming (yeah, I know!) that it isn't the desktop video card. I would appreciate any insight that you might offer. Thank you in advance!!
From what you have described I have to agree it is most likely your monitor. Do you have another monitor you can connect to the desktop?

When you hooked it to your laptop, did you switch the laptop to an external monitor? It’s not typically automatic unless you’ve selected multiple monitors in your display options. Most of the laptops I’ve owned use one of the function keys to toggle between the laptop screen or external port. Check your manual and try again before assuming the monitor is bad. Also, have you pressed the control on the monitor to turn on the menu, and if so, what happens?
I, myself, would replace the monitor.
I had a monitor randomly have the edge of night (black screen) start sliding in from right to left.
I replaced the monitor, it wasn't the card. The graphics circuitry is probably on the mother board - used to be a card.
60/40 it's the monitor.
How old is it?
My monitor was about 10 years old.
I had that happen to me once, I love my new monitor.
The laptop is set for multiple monitors, When I attached the HDMI to the laptop, the monitor "flickered" momentarily, but remained dark. When I press the control on the monitor, it displays the menu, but nothing else. The monitor's probably no more than 4 or 5 years old. Thanks for your help.
Since you can see the menu on the monitor, delve into the menu to ensure the 'source' or 'input' is set to HDMI, or whatever cable you're using. Also check the frequency being used, while you're checking those settings on the monitor.
Also disconnect and connect the hdmi AND the power cables from BOTH ends in case something got loose. Then try another power cable as I’ve seen them fail.
Thank you all for your input. I purchased a monitor and I am back in business!!

I have had several things, high-tech, that had been working one minute, and then a minute later, nothing. Nothing again. No warning. Just stop - and that's it

G'morning Joe.
That procedure I mentioned above works on many different devices. Nothing to buy or build and only takes a minute.
1 Unplug the power and all other cables
2 Press and hold down the device's power button for seven seconds
3 Reconnect power and cables
4 See if it now works

I tried this, thanks to you, but it didn't work. Again, thank you!
