Interesting image that you took of a Soldier in a manhole Bratislava, Slovakia. Only in Slovakia because in USA person would trip and sue.

Thanks for the memory. When I saw this sculpture in Bratislava, my interpretation was of some sort of municipal worker, but you are likely correct in identifying it (him) as a soldier. The body language and facial expression do not seem particularly fierce, however. Bratislava seemed like a very interesting place for the short time we were there, and any city that installs public art like this piece should be commended.

A few years ago, my wife and I plus a couple friends did a Christmas markets tour that included Bratislava. As you know, the sculpture is located close to a busy shop. People would lay down to get a face-on shot! As a result, two tripping hazards! 🥴

I shot this same guy about 10 years ago, so he has been there for a while.

I thought he was a maintenance worker. Bratislava’s historic district was wonderful. I have stayed there on bicycle trips. Great food, great sights, incredible history. The Castle is a worthwhile visit and the walled portion has great signage regarding its history are very informative and helpful.

We visited there in September 2015 and finding Cumil which means "The watcher" doing what was intended by the painter/sculptor, Viktor Hulik, to generate discussion of the sculptures meaning. Was he just a sewer maintenance worker resting or ogling young ladies' lower extremities. During the restoration of the old city, many sculptures were placed nearby for the same reason. Another sculpture that should be of interest to UGH is one called "paparazzi". Statue of a photographer shooting around a corner at "the famous" leaving the restaurant Paparazzi. I read that this restaurant has closed down and since they owned the sculpture the town is negotiating to bring it back to the area.
Great place to visit.

I have been in that exact spot. We had a chance to go to Czech Republic and there where my daughter in law’s paternal grandparents live. Many interesting building statues etc. Housing for most is old style communist.
