Hi fellow hoggers! I’m Paco Fernandez from Mexico City. I would like to share a little bit of nostalgia from the times of analog photography. These two cameras I’m talking about are, my first SLR, which I bought at a department store in 1970, (on my mother’s account) and paid her religiously every month. Back then I was 18 years old.
Now after searching for some time I finally found the exact model I used to have in those days a Praktica Super TL, German made by Pentacon.
The other one is my current camera the Nikon D850, as everybody knows Japanese made.
*Note: My very very first camera actually was a Kodak Instamatic 50 and it was a gift from my father back in 1963, I was only 11 years old. I remember I used to open the camera’s film cover right after taking a picture to see if there was something visible on the film!!
I believe it would be interesting if you guys could share stories or anecdotes of your first camera ever, at least, I would be very interested in reading them. Thank you very much

Francisco, I always thought that the shutter release on the Praktica was well placed. My very first camera was a Nikon FM somewhere around 1979-1980 (as soon as I could afford it after my wedding in '78). Still have one, though not the original and, by now, some 22 other Nikons "down the road." Over the years my wife must have thought that my "Hobby" was trying to keep Nikon afloat.

My first camera ever was a Mickey Mouse camera when I was a kid (<10 I think) - the nose was the lens, and it used 126 cartridge film (remember those!), and these one-shot flash cubes which were horrendously expensive. Not sure if I had the exact one as pictured, but it was very close to that at least. I took a few rolls then took the camera apart - I took all of my toys apart to see how they worked.

2nd camera was a 110 Minolta instamatic camera that my aunt gave me. Remember those tiny 110 negatives - the analog equivalent of the micro 4/3 or maybe the cell phone cams (haha - not quite).

3rd camera was a Praktica LB2 SLR - yep those East German (at the time) made 35mm (was first 35mm for me) cameras. The LB2 had a selenium powered light meter mounted near the film rewind crank - no TTL metering! All manual! The shutter release was weird mounted next to the lens. Sure wish Praktica was still around in the digital age. Took many pix with than camera but only had the 50mm/2.8 screw mount M42 lens. Got it as a Christmas gift - my parents could not afford a Japanese camera at the time like those from the majors. Years later I bought an B2000 electronic Praktica - nice film camera but had a loud shutter. Also had a couple of lenses with the B- Praktica bayonet mount.

After that had a variety of 35mm pocket film cameras but then eventually went with the OM series cameras and built some kit over the years...until digital in 2000 with the Oly 3030 (3.3 mp)....then years later with Nikon.
My first camera ever was a Mickey Mouse camera whe... (show quote)

With this camera, was it even necessary to say "Smile"?

Actually ol' Mickey's shutter was pretty accurate. Way back when I was taking M&P we all had a chance to bring our cameras in to check the shutters for accuracy. The instructor pulled out his Mickey camera and tested it (maybe 1/60th?) Don't remember much about the result except it passed. I'd forgotten all about Compton pulling that out until I saw the photo. Good memories.

I learned a lot about bad composition with a Polaroid Instamatic as a twelve year old. As a young man I took my first really good shots with Kodachrome in an Olympus OM 1. A marvelous camera that was stolen from my neck on a train platform when I was laden with luggage. So far, it’s the only time that I’ve been robbed. I replaced it with a much less expensive Fuji that also took some of my most memorable shots in Cape Town, Soweto and Kruger. Soweto visits made me a freak at that time, shortly after the riots in the seventies. I developed friendships and enjoyed visits to them in their 2 room cinderblock homes despite Apartheid and the real danger to my safety. Taking pictures there was illegal but I managed to snap a few off.

My first camera was a Hanimex Praktica Super TL with I believe the Oreston f 1.8/50 Lens. Great camera, wish I still had it. I bought it in a dept. store in 1971 before being shipped out to Germany for my 18 month tour (army). Shortly after arriving in Germany I bought a Minolta minature 110. Not sure of the exact model but it was the size of a pack of cigarettes and used 110 film. It had a socket for flash cubes. Remember those? Currently my go to camera is my Nikon Z6.

My first camera was a Kodak instamatic (not sure of the model, circa 1964) and I remember it used the "magic cube" flash bulbs. It lasted me from age 8 clean through to college age, when I acquired a Nikormat FTN which I still pull out and use from time to time. My regular camera now is a Fujifilm XT-2 which reminds me of an older SLR because of the control layout.

I got a Univex camera for my 5th birthday in 1937. It used 00 film. Moved on to a Kodak Autograph, 116 film. Made money in high school with a Speed Graphic. After many other cameras now have a D850.

I received a Canon TLQL with a 50 f? Nothing auto on the camera whatsoever And some film one Christmas morning I was maybe 10years I read the manual all the way and as I recall it was shorter than the index for my Olympus omdem1markiii. What a way to learn manual focus match needle at 36 exposures at a time, I shoot that in one burst with focus stacking

Mine was a Kodak 127 in the mid-1950's, a model that was made from 1952-1959. Doing a little research recently, I found it was the model made from 1952-1955 (it has a smooth face-plate, not a cross-hatched face-plate). Millions were made. Original price: $4.75
