Nikkor Z 14-30 vs. F mount 16-35

Considering replacing latter with former as I no longer have F mount cameras. My main reasons are lighter weight and not having to fuss with FTZ. I would sell later to help finance former. And maybe sell 24-70 since I’m happy with 24-200 over that range.

Have a cruise planned to St. Petersburg in June and think it might be better than 24-200 in Hermitage...which I will only experience this one time.

I did check this physical comparison: https://www.dpreview.com/products/compare/side-by-side?products=nikon_16-35_4_vr&products=nikon_z_14-30_4_s

Note that former requires FTZ, which makes the weight about 2x.

I have it and find it’s a great lens. Slightly less sharp in the far corners than the 14-24 f2.8. But much smaller and lighter. I just over frame and crop with my Z7. Happy shooting.

Outstanding Lens. Don't even blink. You'll be glad you switched.

Do it. You are spending how much on a cruise plus travel for a one-time trip and you worry about the cost of a lens? Plus, since (I believe) there is still a good chance that the pandemic will be restricting travel by then, at least you will still have your new lens.

Good news is no penalty if need to reschedule. We had our first vaccine shots Wednesday so will be good. At least three countries involved to get to St. Petersburg though so there is still a risk.

Read some reviews so have decided to get it. Not overjoyed with KEH offer for 16-35 so listed it here first. Also their offer on 24-70 so low not worth parting with it. It is a little better quality in its range than 24-200 and great for indoor shots.

Other choice is whether to save $300 by getting refurb or grey market. Have done that on another lens and so far worked out fine.

I have both, the latter for my D750 and the Z 14-30 for my Z6II. While I was happy with the 16-35, there has been a significant improvement in IQ with the Z system. I do real estate photography and I have not even taken the FTZ adapter out of the box to try the 16-35 on the Z camera. I recently posted a photo shoot under Architectural and Street section. Next purchase will be the Z 24-200.

Do it. I did the exact same thing..for Z6, when I sold my D810; and have never looked back. I hope that your trip goes off without any issues.

Just speaking to optical qualities, according to the objective Imatest numbers that I see, ALL the S lenses for the Z cameras far exceed their F mount counterparts - and ALL other brands too BTW !......

Try MPB.com to sell your 24-70. They bought mine for a far better price than KEH

I sold all my F mount lenses like a 70-200 f2.8 and purchased the Z lenses 14-30 and 24-200. Best move ever. I have all the ranges I need with a sharper and lighter package. Go for the 14-30, it is my favorite lens, maybe it will also be your favorite.
