I have an AF-S NIKKOR 55-300mm 1:4.5-5.6 G ED that will not auto-focus on my Nikon D7200 body. I have the D7200 set up for back button auto-focus. I have made sure both the camera body and the lens are set to auto-focus.

When I put this lens on my back-up D5300 body, also set up for BBF, the auto-focus functions correctly.

All my other lenses an AF-S NIKKOR 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6G II, AF-S NIKKOR 35mm 1:1.8G, AF-S NIKKOR 50mm 1:1.8G and a TOKINA 11-16mm F2.8 (IF)DX II auto-focus correctly on the D7200.

The only thing I have done to correct this is to clean the electrical contacts on the lens with a Zeiss lens cleaning wipe.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

According to Nikon, this lens should work on the 7200... I would clean the contacts on the camera again and then do a reset if that did not work.

Because you're having issues with the lens, I suggest you ensure you have the latest camera and lens firmware installed on your camera. You can download the firmware and instructions directly from Nikonusa.com.

I think I would try a reset on the camera and see what you get. Just press the ISO and exp +- button at the same time to reset it.

Is this something new? Did it work on your D7200 at one time and then stop working?

I have both that camera and the lens and they work fine together. I tried it a few minutes ago just to be sure.

This is new. The silent motor slowly became less silent and would not auto-focus every time. Now it won't auto-focus when the camera is level or pointed up. If the camera is pointed down at more than a 45 degree angle the auto-focus works.

I believe I have the latest firmware, C 1.04 and L 2.017

I'll try cleaning the contacts on the camera, so far I have only cleaned the contacts on the lens.

Going to hold off on the reset as a last resort. I don't look forward to going back and reentering settings for BBF and other changes.

Sounds like a contact problem when you say"If the camera is pointed down at more than a 45 degree angle the auto-focus works."

I gave the contacts in the camera a good rubdown with a Zeiss lens cleaning wipe and the AF seems to be working now. Will take it outdoors tomorrow and see if it continues to work.
Thanks one and all for your suggestions. This site is the best.

You can save on, and reload your settings from an SDHC.

The change in operating sound would concern me. A bad sign with most machines. It is not a particularly expensive lens and there are some really good deals out there, if you go for a repair estimate, suggest you balance that against used replacement cost.

Thanks. How do you save your settings to an SDHC?
Technology wise, I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer.
