This neighborhood went downhill very fast we moved out in 1952 and by 1960 over half the stores were closed.
It got so bad that the large grocery stores closed between 1960 and 1980.
Used to go to St. Louis frequently on business for decades, ending a dozen or so years ago - toward the end, you had to pay attention to where you went. Suppose most cities have gone that way.
Did you ever put out someones eye with the BB gun. Mine was a multiple shot and while I wasn't allowed to do it this was the first time I found that there was payment plan you could use.
Nice photo. I cannot do the same. I grew up in Detroit and most of what I knew is gone and not even replaced by better things.
Sorry I saw 70 Miles south of St Louis, and that is where I got the Idea you were near Sikestown, MO. but I guess you just live close to the Restruant... I really like the Atmosphere there... "Flying Rolls"..

Nope I didn't, But my second BBgun was a lever action and it broke when my neighbor fired it without a magazine in it and apiece hit me and I lost sight of everything but light in my left eye and it wasn't even pointed at me, I was 14 at the time, twenty or so years later due to advances of modern medicine and surgery I regained 20/25 vision in that eye, now forty plus yrs. later its down to 20/30.
Damn, had to go out and clean the snow off the satellite dishes before I could send, lost internet and tv.

Thank you very much fetzler
There is only one other surviving business on that street , The Crown Can't Kitchen Est. 1905 and still owned by the original family.
There are more images of the old neighborhood on my Web page

Ahhhh what?, Sikeston is well over 150 miles south of St.Louis, I have only been near that restaurant three times in my life.
I have been through Beloit !A beautiful town then!, once in the 1970's going to Janesville to take a couple and their son to the School for the Blind.

That's a great trip down memory lane Frank. I bought a pellet gun with my hard earned paper route money at our
little old local hardware store in Ottawa, Ontario and had it confiscated almost immediately by my Dad.
That area is unrecognizable now with all the old businesses replaced with condos and Starbucks.
Hadn't thought of it in years. Thanks.

The only thing that really keeps me coming back is the Crown Candy Kitchen , they still make the best malt I have ever tasted, they make their own ice cream and use powdered malt plus you get the whole can.
Had my first malt there 76 years ago, I lived right across the street at the time, we moved six blocks away that fall just before my sister was born.
Good shots and better memories, Frank!

When I moved out of St.Louis in 72 there wasn't anywhere I was afraid to go, when I returned to work in the city in 77 I was amazed at how it had deteriorated , because of some of the placed my job took me I began packing a mod 66 S&W. luckily I never had to use it, I drove wreckers towing for multiple police depts. and repoed for three banks,There were The Smith Bros. made me feel a lot better.
