Around here there are plenty of opportunities for the females and the young, but the males disappear and seem to hang out together in places you can't get to, or at least in places where you aren't supposed to be.
If you do see a male he is usually so far away you would need the Hubble to get a decent shot, like yours.
By the way, your second shot is the definitive Wood Duck shot and belongs in a birder's guide. It's too bad the male isn't fully in frame, but you have to make due with what you can get sometimes. I would kill for that opportunity.
