Yes!
I’m going to stay with my D850
I don’t think the Z Cameras have surpassed it

I was on a Swiss Air 747 once where someone tried to load a US tolerance shipping container (older 747) on a metric tolerance 747 (newer 747). It didn't fit past one of the airframe ribs and the person running the loading truck tried shoving it in. Now its stuck inside the 747. It couldn't just be pulled out - it was unloaded then cut out. 8 hours later we're taxing to the runway.

Very Swiss ...

Does this mean that everything you've done with your D5iii was just dumb luck?

Wouldn’t that mainly depend on who wants to know ???

The early verdict on this camera was that it (like many camera manufactured mirrorless camera's) it had trouble holding and acquiring focus on moving objects.
Nikon is not alone, I have issues with the Sony a9 and a7r4, and the new canon R5 has had issues.
When mirrorless do produce, they really deliver. I save 5 different focusing modes in my a9 and can quickly switch to the one I need for a particular scene.
When I first owned a Sony Mirrorless, the learning curve was steep on learning to quickly getting lock on focus.
Still, my keep rate is not up to my Nikon GROUP AUTO FOCUS focusing system.
My personal advice, get the Z7II if your shooting action shots, other wise the Z7 works great for still photography.
With all of this said, I am getting the hang of it. Below is a recent shot taken with the Sony a9 and Sony 600 mm f4, 1/3200 sec. f4 ISO 500. Red Shoulder Hawk with nesting material.

Beautiful shot, Bill. Love the Sony. Stay safe.

My opinion is that it's an outstanding camera. I shoot with one and had a difficult time warming up because of early focusing issues. These issues have been confronted via firmware. To me, it's a different camera than it was 2 years ago. Sure. Still one card slot, XQD/CF Express.... I don't shoot weddings. I've not experienced an issue with 'gasp' one card slot.

The Z7 feels so great in my hand.... the weight of it, the location of the buttons, its weather proofing. We (my Z and I) shoot in all weather conditions, with -29F being the coldest it was subjected to (not windchill). Its been a pure joy to carry it with me.

So.... opinion on Z7 is a thumbs up:)

Haven't had a reason to buy it. Still love the feel of my D850 and grip. I added the CFEx card and the larger battery which helped buffer on continuous shooting and noted an increase in lock-on focus speed.

I still support the statement that the Nikon D850 is one of the best DSLRs made to date. Would consider a new Nikon DSLR if there is one released.

Still not sold 100% on mirrorless if but for one reason: getting dust in the sensor frequently. The mechanical shutter I do believe, offers a modicum of protection, albeit the shutter doesn't allow for the speed in FPS as a mirrorless.

I don't have any more issues with dust on the sensor of the Z7 than I did with my 850. I loved my 850, but it just got too heavy for me. Due to repetitive motion, it destroyed my shoulder (it with the 200-500). I've since moved on to more of a landscape shooting model, which is why the Z7 is a great fit.

Re: the sensor being exposed... I have zero issues with that. The sensor is protected by glass. When you clean the sensor, you clean the glass that is protecting the sensor (otherwise you'd clearly destroy the chip). The shutter mechanism is actually far more delicate than the sensor is.... so MILCs that have the shutter close over the sensor in order to protect it..... well, I don't particularly agree with the logic. Tomato, potato.

I am not saying I don't agree with you, however the dust on the sensor is one of the most often reported issues of the mirrorless in terms of maintenance and keeping clean pix OOC. I would say that is the one common issues I have read and heard about, second has been the focus lock. Totally agree with you on the weight of D850 vs Z cameras. I am well over 60 years old and have 2 blown out shoulders and do find it tough lugging the 200-500 on the D850 but still get good shots. I am looking at a 600mm now. Never give up.

Ah, so you feel my pain. Do I miss my 850? Yes. Because it was an amazing wildlife camera and I had an outstanding copy of the 200-500. Trying to be more kind to my body. Of course, that won't prevent me from going snowshoeing today with a lighter piece of kit. Little Olympus M1 Mkiii is the hiking buddy of choice today. I'm keeping an open-mind with my gear:) and trying new things. I find I get good pics regardless what I take out these days. If I take the Oly, I wish I brought the Z... BUT, rarely is it the other way around.... unless I'm shooting very slow shutter speeds hand held.

Depends what your use case is:

If you do Portraits, Events, Landscape, Architecture, Real Estate, Street then the Z7 is an excellent camera.

If is not as good for faces pace - wildlife or sports shooting as the AF tracking on the Nikon's is behind Canon and Sony - this should be rectified this year with the release of the Z9? flagship camera from Nikon which is said to have AF tracking that is better than the D6 - if this is true then Nikon will be right there with the others.

Z camera for the genres of Photography mentioned above (ie. everything except fast action) are excellent choices - especially if you are an existing Nikon DSLR user. You will be able to use all your lenses and accessories (i.e media cards and flashes etc.).

Additionally, many of your DSLR lenses will work better on the Z than they did on the DSLR's as they will now enjoy 3 axis image stabilization where many had none before and focus points to the edge of the frame instead of clumped in the middle.

I am a portrait and events shooter and I find my Nikkor 58mm 1.4 and 105mm 1.4 are more enjoyable to shoot on the Z camera than they were native on the DSLR's for just this reason.

So if you are a Nikon shooter and fast action is not your use case then the Z camera's are for you.

Hope this helps.

are you sure you know what your talking about? The Z7 is one of the best cameras I've ever owned. The shutter is super quiet and no matter what iso I use the images are flawless. Do your homework
