Took my D800 and D500 to Peachtree Camera in Atlanta yesterday. The D800 will not focus today. Tried it with lenses where you can turn off auto focus and lenses where there is no switch. Also, when I set the camera on single with focus set -intead of release - it still takes a picture. I have the camera set for auto focus. The auto focus center button will not change and setting either.
The D500 works fine. Trying to get help without driving the 8 hour round trip again.
Thanks as always.

If it were me I would think a phone call to the repair man was in order.
Pull the battery for half an hour, replace it and try again. Try the two button reset try again . No joy, call the Repair man.
Is it possible they set the A/F to back button instead of shutter release, or vice versa.

Camera auto manual is set to auto focus, any auto/manual switches on the lens set on auto? Mode dial is set to Continuous, CH, CL?
will try a full reset to factory settings first. I have tried to set it to shutter release and to back button and neither works. I have used every lens I own to see if it will wrk with them including a Tamron lens too. Some lenses have the ability to turn off auto and others do not. Same result.
The D500 is fine but will take a picture when in single frame and when the camera body is set to focus not release. I often rely on that feature to insure a focused picture
my 850 shows similar issues when the lens is not firmly seated
Have you checked the position of the switch on the camera?

did you rotate the lever on the back to focus lock? It moves easily? see page 5 and page 96 of the manual. You can download it in about 5 seconds if you have internet

I believe that locks the position of the focus point, rather than locking focus.

Check to see if the repair person set your camera for back button focus only
Have not experienced this with my two D800E's. Hope they can help. 8 hrs. round trip is a lot of driving, even for someone who really enjoys driving.
Heading back to Atlanta to see what they can do.

Does the LCD turn on when you press the button half way down?
Not sure what you mean. I can see the object being photographed but the camera does not focus.
