I recently got a copy of Disk Drill PRO to recover some lost files on a couple of old disk drives. I selected it based upon PCMag review of various software for file recovery. On the drive I tried, it found and recovered a number of files including those I was hunting. You can read about it at cleverfiles.com and Google the PCMag review. They offer a lifetime upgrade option for $29 if you buy at the same time; however, if you don't you likely will receive an email in a day or so offering it for $9.
Also, if you are a teacher, professor, student or work at an educational institution, they offer a 20% discount. So far, I have found it easy to use and glad to have a tool that helps find and recover lost files and photos. It also works with iOS phones, but I haven't needed to try it with my iPhone yet.
There are a number of such programs and you may have other experience you would like to share with the UHH members.

I would just add that now that you’ve recovered them (glad to hear it!), I hope you make 2 other copies of your data - a local backup and an off-site disaster recovery copy.
Try ashampoo photo recovery works great. Every photographer should have in your toolbox.
