There is no way that I know of that you can use a Xenon flash with the cell phone.

MANY, many years ago (with film) I used remote flash triggered units quite successfully. My only question would be whether the strength of the phone flash would be strong enough to trigger the remote(s), where the camera flash was, obviously. The trigger was a separate very small photocell unit which the remote flash was plugged into (line of sight).

One way to find out for sure....

But it's really not a Xenon flash but rather a high intensity LED. It flashes and not continuous but the duration is much longer than a Xenon flash so it can sync with the phone.

I’m liking that ! It avoids abusing the fragile looking on-off switches on my video lighting panels :-)

True, but that violates UHH tradition.

My tradition-observant guess is that the phone’s LED lacks the spike for triggering slaves, and that even if the slave were to trigger, it would flash before, but not during, the exposure.

TRADITION !!!

That means that the phone flashes before the exposure??? How does that work?

The phone light turns one before the exposure and turns off after the exposure.

I agree. Several Lume Cubes can be triggered by the iPhone.

Is there a triggering solution to have a smart phone drive one or more off-camera flashes? Either wired or wireless. Reasonable cost? This would be used by people who have limited experience with photography so keep it simple. Thanks for your help.

Use other people's phones (see below) or buy a small video light such as a Lumecube.

(We blew a lamp during filming of a 48-Hour Film Project short. Cast and crew pulled out their phones and saved the scene! Crazy, I know, but it worked.)

I've used optical flash triggers for years. They're a little hard to find now, but I believe Wien peanut slaves are still available. They plug into the PC Socket on the flash--also becoming hard to find new. Used with a manual flash dialed to full or fractional power, you should get some results. Hint, the triggers take only a small amount of "flash" to trigger, so to mask or diffuse the on camera flash effect of the phone, try to tape a piece of paper over the phone flash--not the lens.

Good luck.

Have you tried triggering your off camera flash with the smartphone flash? Although I use a trigger, all of my flash units may also be triggered by another flash. The flash setting for my speedlights is S1 for optical triggering.

It also has an optical sensor for flash, activated by holding the right button down for 3 seconds.

Profoto makes an app for the Iphone to trigger its off camera lights - apparently it works very well F-Stoppers did a video on it - unfortunately Profoto lights are VERY expensive.

Maybe Godox will follow suit - who knows.
