Ugly Hedge Hogs Friends
I don’t remember how I got steered on to UHH, I watched it a couple of years before I became a member. I am very happy that I did. It has given me an insight to two subjects that I am interested in: Human beings and the process of making pictures.
So being a bit philosophical of nature I did a lot of thinking about it and the people who are members and I (for myself) concluded that UHH may consist of FOUR more or less similar entities.

Number one contains what I think of as the “Crème de la crème”, the members are on first name with the gods, they know of any esoteric aspect of photography, they make comfortable livings making pictures. They have wisdom to share and do so generously, sometimes for free but also for numerations well deserved. It is a great benefit to UHH that they belong. Mostly these members are professionals

Number two contains what I think of as gifted amateurs; often they match the members of group one, sometimes in equipment, often in knowledge and in keenness in theirs asymptotic pursuit of perfection. They are as a whole generous with their skills and often take pains to explain issues to the needy.

Number tree has many “Newbies”, people who are beginners and are thirsty to gain more knowledge about all aspects of picture making. I am in awe of the patience that members of One and Two show in replying to what must often appear naïve questions that could readily be answered with a bit of work on the part of the questioner!

Number four is not generally acknowledged as being members as such. They are people who LOVE pictures (photographs) and don’t really care how they are produced. I am reminded of a member of the Supreme Court who, when asked how he defined pornography answered (this is not verbatim) that he had no verbal definition but he knew it when he saw it. For some that description also fits “Great pictures”. I think UHH may have a number of people in that category.

I am constantly impressed by the kindness and fellow feeling shown i UHH

The most significant thing I see, having experience with several sites, is that this is a community of photographers. Of course there are the occasional "family fights", but generally no malice and pretty soon, it all blows over.

Politics, humor, discussion of events of the day from the left right, and center viewpoints. I also appreciate the posts and comments from people with very different life experiences from mine, and from people who remember well times from before I was born.

Good observations. However, one thing that I have noticed is that Group 1 - the professionals - rarely post any photos. There are maybe a dozen contributors whose word I would take as gospel, and they can be generous with their advice and knowledge, but that group rarely post any photos to illustrate their points or even to show us what to aspire to. Pity.

Entertainment is waaaay huge here, although I recently realized I should refer to it by a very similar but less dismissive term: “Infotainment”.
