I am considering switching from Photoshop 7 to something more update, and more compatable with Windows 7. I am currently an XP user on both desktop and laptop, but am considering going to a more powerful and dedicated use for photos and graphics on a new laptop - however, anything available now runs wndows 7.

I am uncertain that my PS7 and QuarkXpress would work successfully on Windows7. Any suggestions or comments are welcome. Thanks

I have X-4 and it is a great program --- powerful close to or exceeds PS (no one has said what it won't do compared to PS5)-- Has a HELP column(optional show/hide) that changes when you click on a tool (--- low cost --- ultra comes with (for free) expensive plug in package. For about $40 for the X4 what more can you ask? (http://www.lgeoo.com/corel-paintshop-pro-x4-ultimate.html )quick search shows $45 could and should be less) X5 will be on sale eventually.

Oh, sorry one problem! Corel Products do lacks Adobe's snob appeal!!

I Have Corel Paint Shop Pro X5 and I love it, and with the software that they have included, Full version of Nic Software Color effecs pro 3, Kai's KPT Collection and Face Filter 2 you are certainly getting your money's worth, Upgrade price $79.95 Australian dollars :-P I was going to go for the Photoshop elements Update, but when Adobe more than doubled the update price because I lived in Australia, I decided Adobe can go take a running jump, The price went from $79.95 US to over $165.00 Australian, that is just plain greed. I have it running on a Windows 7 laptop and it seems fine. I haven't fully explored all of its features, but glad one poster has drawn attention to some of the add-ons I may have missed.

I have no experience with PS7 or QuarkXpress.

Actually, I haven't "fully explored" anything, but intend to.

I am using X5 Ultimate. There are a couple of features that Photoshop has that I wish Paintshop pro would have, such as the control points and that click and drag selection tool.

But I can't afford photoshop so I learn to live without them.

Bottom line is it's a great program for those of us who can't afford photoshop but don't want to try to learn GIMP.

I found a tutorial on selection tools for PS... but as is norm, if you know the subject then the tutorials are more meaningful. Control point?

Actually, what I was referring to is with the selection tool in PS cs5...or perhaps 6. It looks and works like the magic wand. But if you continue to hold the mouse button and drag it, the selection will grow. Much the same as holding down the [shift] key in PSP when using the magic wand. I found the PS selection tool a bit more accurate than the PSP magic wand.

Hi, I'm new to the forum - have enjoyed reading posts for a few weeks. Just wanted to say that I'm a long-time Paint Shop Pro user and just upgraded to the latest version. I think it's a great program with sophisticated tools that are right up there with Photoshop (which I also use). Some things are handled better by Photoshop and others are handled better by Paint Shop. Paint Shop is more intuitive, I think. For the price, you can't beat it - and this is coming from someone who does serious editing to wedding photos and such.

I'm on a budget like most people. X5 does everything I need and more. The price of Photoshop puts it way out of my price range, plus I can think of a few other things I can spend that money on.

Hi, I just purchased Corel Paintshop Pro 4x, about a month ago. Still learning it, but I did receive many free extras with it, such as a free photo book, 7 day trials through Fotolia ect. Very impressed with the program so far. Now is the time to buy, many free give aways, and low low price because it is the 'old' version. Only paid $34.99 for download program. Hopes this helps...

DebAnn,

I would like to add a couple of more advantages to PSP x-4,5.
I have, also, been using PSP for several years, since way before Corel purchased the application from JASC.

Since version x-4, PSP has had the option to use dual monitors, thereby allowing us to place working content on two different monitors increasing our productivity by leaps and bounds. Another valuable option is the addition of the Manage, Adjust, and Edit workbenches as separate windows, this allows the conservation of scarce RAM resources.

I have ran Paint Shop Pro for years. It is all that most photographers need with the exception of the super pros. Very easy to use. I presently have upgraded to X5 Ultimate. Wonderful. Running just fine on both Windows XP and 7. You can download a fully functional free trial of X5 and try it out for yourself. Personally, I would recommend PSP X5 Ultimate.

"PSP has had the option to use dual monitors"

I thought multiple monitors was a Windows function? I used to support users who sometimes had as many as three, and was the first to introduce the feature at my workplace. Came out with Windows 95, if I remember correctly. Some people in the stock market have real elaborate set-ups with streaming on different monitors.

Maybe PSP has a special way of making it an enhanced method of viewing photographs. I'll have to explore that as it has real value in comparing pics, proof pages, etc.

I have the Koers book "Picture Yourself Learning Corel Paintshop Pro X4" which makes no special mention of it.

I'd be interested in hearing how you handle your own workflow, etc. using dual monitors.

Thanks.
