Lately I've been getting visited by a Coopers hawk that has been trying to invite birds that come to my bird feeder to breakfast. He likes to sit in a bush not far from my kitchen window where I've taken a few shots of him in the past through the window. However every time I try to open the window to get a clear shot he would take off. This morning I left the window open before he got there and waited for him. He came around 8:40 and at first stayed hidden behind branches (see the where's Waldo shot below). But eventually he moved to where I could see him better. The first set of shots where taken at a 500mm focal length, the next set where taken using a 2X teleconverter with the 500mm lens to get a 1000mm focal length. Note: only the closeup of his eyes has been cropped. All questions, comments and suggestions are welcome.

Wow, very nice shots! That's living proof that a 2x TC can actually work. Never thought I would say such a thing! Can you share the details?

Nice. I loved my 5Div and you are proving here the capabilities of that body with the right glass on it. And the IQ with the 2X on it is pretty darn good. These are great and thanks for sharing!

Your close-ups are really spectacular. All my shots are the "where's Waldo" type!

Waldo is in the center toward the top, I can see his eye and a bit of his tail

Hi Manglesphoto
Thanks for viewing the hawk images and the comment. You got it you can just make out an eye, some tail feathers and a talon. This was also taken at a 500mm focal length.

Great Shots!

May I ask what camera / lens and converter were used....
Thanks

Hi Manglesphoto
Thanks for viewing the hawk images and the comment. For this shot I was using a canon 5D MarkIV DSLR, a canon 500mm IS USM F 4.0 lens (I bought it used as it was outside my budget new) and for the 1000mm I added on the canon EF 2x type III extender. The extender also works well on my canon 70-200mm telephoto lens.

Hi Retired CPO
Thanks for viewing the Hawk images and for the comment. With a the higher end canon lens, the canon EF 2X type 3 extender works quite will. For star images is adds a small amount of distortion at the edge of the field but not much. For regular images I haven't noticed any distortion, but you do loss a few F stops (the 500 goes from F4 to F8 as expected) and the depth of field with the longer focal length requires very careful focusing.
