I went with the Wimberley and glad I did. I don't think there is a better one out there.

I use this for my monopod

And this for my tripod

Been using Wimberely WH200 for about 5 years. TWO HUNDRED+ shoots. Global travel, snow, rain, wind, sand. Supports a Nikon 400 2.8 VR G, TC, plus D5. Not a problem.

The Wimberly WH200 recommended by others is excellent.

For a light weight gimbal, take a look at the Jobu Jr.3 gimbal. It weighs only 1.5lbs but can support up to 12lbs. I use one with my Nikon D500 with Nikon 80-400mm lens. The camera and lens weight about 5.4lbs so it's well within the capacity of the gimbal. It has finely adjustable friction on the tilt axis and they designed a bushing for the panning axis that gives just the right amount of friction for smooth panning.

The Wimberley has long been the popularly accepted gold standard - at or very near the tops in cost also. It was one of the first gimbals available so it has a long/durable history. Today there are many cheaper adequate options - especially for smaller less demanding applications. The bigger/heavier/more expensive the lens, and the more serious your photography is, the more attractive the Wimberley becomes !
If you do not have a LARGE lens, a less costly option may be adequate for YOU - there are MANY.

Gimbals are designed for lenses that include a foot, usually very long lenses. The D850 is a great camera, but you might want to mention what lens or lenses you plan to use.

I have a Wimberley and it handles a 400 F2.8 with no effort. Mine doesn't have a model number because at the time I bought it there was only one. That was over 15 years ago, maybe close to 20, I used it this morning at Bombay Hook, still smooth as can be.

Good luck.

For you, a gimbal is overkill. If you are planning on getting a longer, heavier lens, then there are some very good choices - among them, Wimberley. I am partial to the Feisol UA180 and ProMedia Gear Katana.

You may be happier with a video fluid head - especially for what you now have.....https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=otON_GcXMBQ

This is what I use and recommend .....Manfro 502.

Try Lensmaster, a UK firm, who built their own gimbals because the existing offerings weren’t good enough. I bought a travel version but there are others.

The WH-200 Wimberley is expensive, and it should be. It will be the last gimbal you own. Silky smooth, strong, durable, a pleasure to own. It is the one I use, if I ever had to sell it, it would go quickly at a premium price. It is simply the BEST GIMBLE on the market.

Good to know that the Jobu JR.3 works well for that weight of kit as I just ordered the Deluxe model for my D500 & Nikon 500 F5.6 PF rig that weighs 5.1 lbs. I have the WH 100 mono gimbal and like it but I thought the Wimberley WH200 was probably overkill for my setup. At 76 I will not be buying anything heavier. In passing as you seem to be very up to date on new gear, what is your opinion of the Flexshooter combination ball head/gimbal that cost $599? Thanks

I agree with Gene. It is why I asked what lens or lenses the OP would be using. If I need to put my Nikkor 70 - 200 on a tripod it sits on a Manfrotto 3221W with a Gitzo G1377M ball head. The ball head works just fine with lenses this size. I update cameras and lenses probably more often than necessary. But, like my Wimberley gimbal, this combo has been with me for about 20 years.
