I love Orb-weavers and am sorry this one is dead. They are beautiful, helpful spiders (and I'm generally leery of spiders). I had one that came inside to live in my kitchen window and I learned a lot from her. I actually provided flies for her! When she died I truly mourned.
Thanks, and I truly can relate and I do not collect spiders for I find the quite beneficial as well as a true wonder. My son brought me this one along with some other insect specimens.
We had a female Spotted Orb Weaver that lived on our front porch. I would sit out there with a cup of coffee and watch her build her web each night. I'd keep the porch light on to attract night flying insects knowing that some would get trapped by her. Before dawn she would take down her web and hide in our bushes only to repeat her web building that evening.
