How do I remove the twig in front of him ... the easiest, most successful way, please.

Careful use of a healing tool should do it -- with emphasis on "careful." I like the orange coloration!

Simple clone tool can work well. But you would want to zoom in very close, use small brush, differing opacities, and work on small sections at a time.

What is your editing software?

Depends on how good you want the results. This is an example doing what Linda suggested but starting with the Patch tool. I'm sure you could get better results if you worked with a smaller clone and healing brush.
Cute li'l feller. I love squirrels.

Linda’s suggestion has worked very well for me. I take a lot of animal and bird shots and invariably have to remove branches, twigs, grass, weeds or even barbed wire that crosses part of the subject. Pay particular attention to her second sentence.

The erase tool in Luminar 4 or AI should do the job for you. It’s the best erase tool I’ve used.

Have you used the clone tool? Does your extremely old editor even have a clone tool? 😊

You're welcome. The Eraser tool won't work because there is nothing (no data=no squirrel) under the stick. If you try to erase the stick, you'll just end up with background.
