Thanks for the chart Sippy. I didn't realize that the increased "effective" f/ stop starts at 1X. Good to know. I should add that my test was done at 4X.

I have the Mitakon Creator 85mm f/2.8 1X to 5X Super Macro lens in a Nikon mount and it is a handy lens to have in the bag for walkabouts and a bargain at $500 compared to the Canon MP-E65 at three times the price.

It has perhaps the best working distance of any macro lens on the market at these degrees of magnification so it is very "lighting" and skittish critter friendly.

HOWEVER...this lens is what prompted me to delve into the relationship of effective f/stop and diffraction for changing magnification truly requires changing the f/stop so I had to start thinking in different ways to work the lens to reduce diffraction that "I may cause" by not paying attention to what the effective f/stop would be rather than what it read on the barrel of the lens.

Mine is the 2nd generation of the lens for the first had a technical flaw in the optics so they changed how it was made. The reviews of the first generation were correctly critical and now it is what it should be.

This lens does miss the mark a bit due to "internal surface glare" which is something that those of us who are fanatics with flocking the inner surfaces of our gear with dead-black velvet know far too well. The camera's sensor sees the glare and tends to produce a softer image and in worse cases can add haze.

Someday when I feel bold...are have too much vodka...I may try to take the lens apart and apply some type of flocking to make it a more perfect lens.

I have the Mitakon Creator 85mm f/2.8 1X to 5X Sup... (show quote)

Thanks for the info on that lens. Do have it attached to an extender or something?
