Has anyone used an Iphone for a monitor for a cannon 7D MarkII. If so would like to get some feed back on what to use and how. Thanks

I have used my iPhone 7 Plus as a monitor for a Lumix GH4, using Panasonic's Image App. It works well for viewing and remote control of the camera, but does not work with Canon equipment.

Because the iPhone would connect via WiFi or BluTooth, you need to do your research, as quality and reliability vary wildly among the cameras that connect to iPhones.

Check your camera manual for options, and check the App Store for the various apps that work with Canons, and their compatibility profiles.

Most of these apps require a *strong* WiFi connection with the camera. You will need an adapter for the 7DII.

My own experience with SD Card WiFi adapters is not good. Cameras with built-in or bolt-on WiFi transceivers work much better.

The 7D II has HDMI output, so there are better dedicated monitor solutions such as the Atomos series of external monitors and monitor recorders. They tend to be pricey...

I’m not aware of any way to use an IPhone as a hardwired (hdmi) display from your camera. You can buy a small (or large) hdmi display that mounts on your flash shoe and connect it via an hdmi cable or you can use a CamRanger connected to your camera which will WiFI to your phone or tablet or PC allowing real-time viewing and camera control.

There are no hardwired options for iPhones that I’m aware of.

I use an Android phone and tablet, an OTG cable, the camera's original USB cable and an app called QDSLR Dashboard to do exactly what you are trying to do with your gear. The software comes in Nikon, Canon and Sony flavors, as well as Android, IOS, Windows and MacOS. It is donationware. Works like a dream.

I think you need something like the Cam Ranger.

Apple sells something. I was there for an iphone replacement & asked the sales person, he sold me a lightning to male usb cable. I doubt it will work without software of some type. I haven't tried it yet. I need a usb female to male usb cable. The one Apple provided is only about 3" long.

Apple sells a cable that is Lightning to USB. It is only about 3" long. You would need another cable , female usb to what ever your camera takes & most likely the app Gene51 listed.

Just to clarify, as I understood the question, the OP wanted to use the IPhone as a monitor (display the output of the HDMI video port), and while there are plenty of HDMI to Thunderbolt cables, their purpose is to work in the other direction - to display the output of an IPhone or IPad on a TV. What Gene is suggesting with the QDSLR ap and I was suggesting with the CamRanger is essentially a camera control and image transfer package, one function of which is to allow you to see the Live View of the camera on the phone or tablet and to transfer and view saved images.

There is a canon app for your iPhone that will do it if your camera has wifi or Bluetooth. I use it all the time on my RP with my iPad or iPhone depending on situation. Gives me complete control over RP functions including live view and focusing. It’s free

That's what an OTG cable is. Female to male adapter.

Funny thing is that the original incarnation of the qDSLR solution was wireless, and it used the exact same TP Link MR3040 mini-router. It was slow at best. But so is the Camranger.

I did a write up in an old blogpost about it:
