Hi Cassidy,
Just a couple pieces of advice for your learning journey.
1) Pick a single camera to use that your comfortable with. I've recommended to others like yourself to just use your iphone. It's a good camera and can do most of what the larger cameras can do. This allows you to focus (pun intended) on composition and light without being burdened by the technical aspects of you hardware. There is a section on smartphones that I would encourage you to visit. This will give you some examples what can be done with the camera 'that is always with you'. You can also check out 500px, seaching on iphones, to see even more examples of beautiful images.
The second is to find a good book on lighting and composition that's easy to read. I've found "The Photographer's Eye" by Michael Freeman to be an excellent book on composition and lighting. Ask your instructor to loan you a copy. You'll advance your photography skills much much faster by focusing on the art of photography than the photographic hardware.
Soliciting feedback in a friendly environemnt is always good to speed up your learning process. I'm glad to see you becoming active here on the UHH. I would recommend you work in specialty sections, such as "For Your Consideration" and "Post-Processing Digital Images", where the people are friendly and courteous. The main photography section can be brutal sometimes.
